I didn't learn anything new, but I liked chatting before the presentation started.

I thought it was well presented and informative, and the insight offered by other travelers in the audience was useful to know. I would love to hear more about solo travel and volunteer vacations in the future.

If people want to discuss couchsurfing, I'll gladly share my experiences with that! :)

Hmmm, so I'm wondering Megan, are you just using this site as a marketing tool for Hostelling International? I'm not o.k. with that and if this meetup is just advert for your organization, count me out.

Hi Donna. I appreciate your concern, but that is not my intention at all. As a sponsor of the site, HI-USA covers the annual cost of maintaining the site. One of my roles as Engagement Manager for HI-USA is to offer opportunities for volunteer-led, free travel education classes for community members throughout the Midwest. We have partnerships with REI stores in MN, WI, MI, and IN, who host our volunteers to teach classes. October 3rd happens to be one of those class dates, and also happens to be the first meetup suggestion since I stepped up as organizer. I strongly encourage members to suggest their own meetups, which certainly don't have to include HI-USA as part of the meetup. HI-USA is as much about connecting a community of travelers as it is about hostelling, and this group is an excellent means for people to connect. Hope this helps to clarify, but if not, I'd be happy to talk more!
