TFF Club Trip - South Holston

  • October 25, 2013 · 7:00 AM

Where: South Holston River

When: Nights of Oct. 25th, 26th, 27th

Space is Limited!

Join us for a TFF Club Trip on the South Holston River. We will be staying in Bluff City, TN the nights of October 25th & 26th. For those who are able to take a Monday off of work, we will also have a reservation for the night of October 27th.

The South Holston is a challenging place to fish, and this trip is NOT recommended for people new to flyfishing (we don’t want your first trip to be frustrating). The South Holston often requires very small flies and technical presentations.

For anglers staying Friday and Saturday night, the expected cost for lodging is $60 for the weekend. For anglers expecting to stay Thursday night as well the expected cost is $80 for all three nights. This is SUBJECT TO CHANGE depending on attendance and will be confirmed prior to the trip.  There are sleeping arrangements for 6 on Thursday night and 13 for Friday and Saturday nights (we may be able to squeeze in a few more who are willing to sleep on the couch). Beds will be assigned on a first-come-first-served basis (as will couches).

Attendees should understand this is a fishing trip, and not a guided trip or introductory class on how to fish the Holston. If people are interested in instruction (which admittedly would be very beneficial), we may be able to arrange for a guide sharing arrangement. Many good options can be found on our Friends of TFF web page: http://triangleflyfishers.org/friends/index.shtml.

If you are interested - Confirm via Meetup and send me (John Leraas) an email ([masked]) with the subject “SOUTH HOLSTON” stating (1) your name, (2) which nights you would like to attend, and (3) if you are interested in hiring a guide. If you do not email me, you will not have confirmed.

I caught the most beautiful fish I have ever caught, a 17+ inch rainbow!

It was a great weekend! Beautiful setting, great company, the lodging was better than expected and the fishing was fantastic! The catching of fish...well...not so good. But it was still a great time on the river.

John, Thanks, I wasn't thinking of full blown meals, just wanted the option if there weren't any local restaurants.

It also sounds like a sleeping bag is the way to go.

Chris, I plan on leaving my house at noon. That would put me at Southpoint about 1:00 depending on traffic. If you can meet me @ the mall that would be great. My cell # is[masked]

Each cabin has a grill and a microwave. Just bring a steak and a potato to nuke for Friday night.... For supper out, there's the Ming Dynasty in Bristol, a Chinese buffet that's pretty good, and reasonably priced. Any thoughts on what people might like for the group meal? The group I usually hang out with does some kind of one pot meal, such as chilli, spaghetti, a stew, etc. This is pretty easy to put together, but you have to know in advance if there are any special dietary needs.

Which brings up another questions, what kind of cooking utensils are there?

I'm heading over Friday after work (~5:30) and returning late Sunday if anyone has a similar schedule (or even wants a ride just one direction) and wants to ride up.

    October 23, 2013

  • Roger B.

I have three seats available for the ride up. I will be stopping off to see my daughter on the way back so you are still welcome to ride back but you will have to put up with a lot of mushy father/daughter talk. John, besides dinner Sat. night, what other food related opportunities will there be? Cooking in the cabin? restaurants/fast food nearby. Should we bring our own food?

And lastly, are sheets/blankets provided or should we bring sleeping bags?

    October 21, 2013

    • John L.

Sheets & blankets are provided... with the caveat that not everyone likes to sleep at the same temperature and the blankets could be considered by some to be a little thin... I'm going to bring a sleeping bag for good measure, but I wouldn't call it essential.

Roger since we will be heading west on 40 and I live in Durham I can meet you like in the woodcroft...southpoint area. I will see if my girlfriend is willing to drop me off at Southpoint, i dont think it would be OK to leave my car there for 4 nights lol. What time are you thinking of departing? And thanks Paul!

Paul, we've had some changes in the list of attendees. I've got you IN A BED for Sunday night!

All Attendees - I'm sending an email out today (hopefully) finalizing everything (including who is sleeping where - only three people have to sleep outside in the rain... guess who!)

I've not fished the Rockhold section of the SoHo, so this should be interesting. Any chance of getting floor space for a sleeping bag Sun. night?

John L. You sold me during the last board meeting. Please count me in for the trip.

Hi, I am new to flyfishing, in that I have been fishing fairly avidly for two years in Virginia and NC and have fished the Holston several times in a drift boat. Will there, however, be opportunities for advice and tips or is this more of a fish on your own trip?

    September 12, 2013

    • John L.

There's definitely the opportunity for advice and tips. We probably won't all be fishing in the same area at a given time and there won't be a "buddy system" to match more and less experienced people. Having said that, people tend to clump up in groups and I think most people are willing to share what they know.

I am interested in attending then. I don't really need a bed spot, so you can fill that with someone else. I am more than happy to bring a sleeping bag. Is the deposit due up front?

For all you nonregular SOHO fly fishers I recommend you view the " fly shop's " website www.southholstonriverflyshop.com .The SHRFS is the Mecca for all knowledge, current information , flies and associated gear and equipment for fishing the SOHO and nearby tailwater, the Watauga River . Check out the monthly hatch charts for flies and their sizes to use for Oct/Nov . Sulphurs / BWO's / Black Flies / Midges (Zebra Midge and it's variations ) / Black Beetles / Nymphs ( Split Backs, PT's -black,reg,olive brown ) are the main ones.
Jeff Wilkins site, www.jeffwilkinsflyfishing.wordpress.com is also informative.
A sturdy wading staff is an absolute must. I speak from experience

Just an FYI - I was slightly off on the original date. We have two houses for Friday and Saturday night. We ARE NOT staying Thursday night; we have one of the cabins Sunday night for people wishing to stay and fish Monday.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
