Regional Weekend Camping Trip - Lake Powhatan

Yay - another camping trip! Lake Powhatan Campground is near Asheville - about 3 hours 45 minutes from Durham. We will go on June 3 and stay 2 nights - returning Sunday afternoon (those who prefer could plan to stay only 1 night or stay longer). It's not too early to make your reservation and get planning for what is sure to be a fun trip!

Located just minutes from Asheville, NC, in the Pisgah National Forest, Lake Powhatan Recreation Area is a heavily wooded campground on the banks of Lake Powhatan. It is nearby the WNC Arboretum, Biltmore Estate and the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is a lake area where you can swim and lots of close hiking options. There are also trails that are appropriate for mountain biking.

The camping amenities include restrooms with hot showers, water spigots throughout the campsites (not one at each site), and mostly shaded sites. If you are interested in taking a day trip out of the park, the gates close at 10pm (I think). This means you would also need to arrive Friday before the gates close! smile

Meals will be on your own with the exception of a vegan potluck on Saturday for dinner. During the day Saturday and before we leave Sunday those who wish can get together for hiking or other activities. Feel free to bring games, stories or what have you and we can hang out around a campfire in the evenings. Kids, friendly and leashed dogs as well as discreet adult beverages are welcome on the trip. You are responsible for knowing and following the regulations of the park as provided when you check in or on their website if you can find it. I can't right now. : )

Please post in your RSVP which campsite you have booked - it would probably be more fun if we are close together - without non-meetup people camping in between us. biggrin Go to this link or call[masked] to make a campsite reservation as soon as you can. I am at the Big John loop campsite number 15.

If you are intimidated, whether by camping or by not knowing what to bring to a vegan camping dinner, feel free to post questions or email me!

PS - I am cross-posting this event with the Lady Trailblazers meetup. They will also be invited to our vegan potluck.

Best group camping dinner I've ever had. Love the Pisgah area trails.

I had a great, relaxing time - hope you all did too! Thank you so much for the non-vegan participation in the potluck! You guys did an awesome job. If anyone is interested in my easy soup recipe, I got it from http://jointhereboot.com/reboot-program/recipes/

This was a great location. I enjoyed reconnecting with folks and meeting some new (to me) people. Awesome potluck Sat night! Thanks for organizing, Stephanie!

I wasn't thinking of leaving real early, maybe 9ish, maybe even stopping in Asheville for lunch then a hike in the general area before going to the campground.

I have Friday off and am thinking of going out early to get in a good hike. Anyone interested, at least in carpooling if not the hike?

The wild party will just be elsewhere, and then I can stumble back to the quiet site (or not).

John, can you really give up the wild partying for a whole night?

Steve, I checked the park website, and its description for site 8 is Shady. 2 tents no larger than 10x12. So, seems like it should work. I'll plan on sharing your site unless I hear otherwise from you, and I'll give you half the site fee when I see you. Thanks much, John

I've not reserved a site yet. All the ones I've looked at say they're big enough for 2 tents no larger than 10x12. Does anyone want to share a site and split the cost?

Thanks for the tips on the site availability, Steve! I told people it wasn't too early to book. : )

I'll be spending Fri night at a hotel in Asheville, then hiking Pisgah all day, so won't arrive at campsite until Sat evening. I also may have tents & gear to share if anyone needs.
