I have gone to Vollmer Farm the last couple of years and picked strawberries - they have some of the best. It is a lot of fun too. The date is tentative - will be confirmed based on strawberry conditions and weather forecast.
Vollmer Farm has certified organic strawberries (strawberries are on the 'Dirty Dozen' list of foods you should always eat organic). They have pick your own as well as pre-picked available for purchase. There are also crafts and other fruits/veggies available for purchase in the market store. It also lists on the website that they have free hay rides around the farm starting so it will be a little bit of a tour! They have an area to have a picnic, so we can pack lunches and eat before we pick.
The farm is a little over 1 hour from Durham. Ideally we will try to organize some carpools so be more environmentally friendly! More details on this later!I think the pick your own is $15 a bucket this year.
Go ahead and mark your calendar for this event - and we will cross our fingers that the strawberries and weather cooperate!
This is a family friendly event, but no dogs are allowed at the farm.
edit - well, I have picked strawberries in the rain before and I have picked strawberries in mud before and I have to say that neither of these was a blast. The weather has been very wet this week and is threatening to be wet and possibly thunderstorm tomorrow. Due to this I am rescheduling. I hope you can make the new date - and I hope the weather cooperates. : )
