Regional Weekend Camping Trip - Carolina Beach State Park

It's camping time! We've done this a few times and it's great. Thanks to Christine and Matt for hosting! It's time to head to Carolina Beach! We have been before in the fall and it was great fun. As long as there isn't a hurricane, the weather is usually quite pleasant too. :)

Carolina Beach State Park is about 2 hours 45 minutes from Durham - 9 miles from Wilmington. We will go on Sept 19 and stay 2 nights - returning Sunday (those who prefer could plan to stay only 1 night or 3 or whatever works for you!). In case of rain, the backup dates will be the following weekend of Sept 26th-28th as an option.

It's not too early to make your reservation and get planning for what is sure to be a fun trip! This should be a really nice time weather-wise to be on the coast. Carolina Beach SP hosts a secluded camping area beneath towering trees, and miles of hiking trails that traverse a variety of distinct habitats--not to mention the presence of the Venus flytrap, one of the world's most unique carnivorous plants--it's no wonder Carolina Beach State Park is a popular coastal attraction. The park camping amenities include restrooms with showers, water spigots throughout the campsites (not one at each site), but no electric hookup. If you are interested in taking a day trip out of the park, the gates close at 8pm. This means you would also need to arrive Friday before 8pm!

Meals will be on your own with the exception of a vegan potluck on Saturday for dinner. Not sure what to bring - just post and you'll get lots of easy suggestions!

During the day, those who wish can get together for hiking or other activities. This area is also pretty bike friendly. Feel free to bring games, stories or what have you and we can hang out around a campfire in the evenings (bring wood or cash to pitch in to buy wood).

Kids, friendly and leashed dogs, as well as discreet adult beverages, are welcome on the trip as far as we're concerned. However, you are responsible for knowing and following the regulations of the park as listed on their website: http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/cabe/rules.php. You are also responsible for your own safety as well as any children or dogs in your party.

Please post which campsite you have booked - it would be more fun if we are close together. Go to http://northcarolinastateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/Carolina_Beach_State_Park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NC&parkId=552806&topTabIndex=CampingSpot to make a campsite reservation as soon as you can.

Post your campsite number in the comments. Campsites are $20 a night. There is room for 2 small to medium sized tents at each site, so please post if you want to try to share with another camper to split the cost.

~ Stephanie

PS - There is no swimming inside this park. Just wanted to be clear on that. Of course there is swimming at nearby beaches. And after Labor Day they allow dogs on the beach.

Hey y'all! We don't have a smart phone so we're not going to be able to see any meetup posts from here on out. Robyn, I messaged you our cell number if you need to reach us. We're getting ready to drive to the beach :-) See you soon!

Sounds great, I'll bring Zatar and olive oil - the dipping sauce for the pita bread, pita bread and fatoush (greek salad without the usual feta cheese) or perhaps fava beans to cook over a little stove.

I will book my tent site close to you guys at #70 today.

Hi there I will be in #73, can't wait to see you guys. If there's a place to kayak nearby I'd love to do that and to hit the beach.

Eline if you want to share a tent and still want to go, I'm driving up tomorrow. I'm not even taking a sleeping bag.

We were thinking about a middle eastern theme for our food this time around... making a quinoa parsley mint tabbouli salad, hummus with pita, black bean & cucumber dish, spiced potato lemon dish (no vegenaise)...does any of that sound good to you?

  • Christine

No Robyn you're not the only one, we'll be there, too :-) And the weather looks like it is going to be PERFECT! Yea!

Hi there, I am driving up on Saturday morning. I'd of course love to have my tent near you, so how do I find out where you'll be? I'll be making my reservation tonight online as long as the weather shows no rain for Saturday and Sunday morning. Can't wait! A VEGAN camping trip. I'm thinking of a campfire stew for the potluck (veggies, potatoe, soy crumbles over a campfire) or a large salad with lots of nuts dried fruit.

Bummed I can't go. School has made a life impossible right now.

We'll be staying at campsite #70. As we get closer to the date it will be helpful for everyone to post what they'll be bringing to make sure we don't double efforts and bring too much of the same thing. Also, it will be a good idea to make sure to bring to our attention of you have food allergies (soy, gluten, etc) so we can be as accommodating as possible to everyone's needs. Please make sure that everything you bring is vegan :-)

It's very likely that I will drive up early Saturday and stay for one night, but will confirm closer to that time. also, Eline, REI will let you rent a tent and camping supplies for the weekend super cheap if you pay for a $20 membership. I plan to just rent mine from REI.
