Veg meetup housekeeping - please read!

Hi, all!
This is a long message, but I implore you to read it all. smile

What a wonderful event so many of us attended last night in Raleigh! Stay tuned as I will soon be posting more events including another at the Seventh Day Adventist Church featuring T. Colin Campbell!

This message is to address some general housekeeping matters. There are almost 300 of you, so you can imagine the volume of email I receive. While I do ask people to pay dues to offset meetup fees, this is not a job for me. I dedicate a lot of hours to this group - and am happy to do so. However, reading the below (and reading event details carefully before contacting me) will help me immensely! Please note - I do not allow members to send out emails to the group without my approval. This protects you from a large volume of spam and/or inappropriate email. Most are more appropriate to be posted on our message board. Email me if you need clarification.

As you may have heard or seen on our message board, October is an exciting month in Durham for the veg community! Local vegan activist Eleni Vlachos has helped plan a month long Bull City Vegan Challenge. 10 Durham restaurants will be featuring new vegan menu offerings and we get to vote on them after we try them! Stay tuned to the meetup for events in October for us to sample these items! And check out or their Facebook page for all the details! Hopefully our support will show local restaurants that they need more veg and vegan options on their menus!

Yes, I realize this is another event in Durham. This just happens to be where this event is happening and where our monthly potluck and brunch occur. I also live in Durham and am more aware of events here. There is no intentional attempt to exclude other cities. If you know of an event in another city, just email me or post it on the Ideas tab. I have not been eating out much lately, so there have been fewer restaurant meetups. If you want more, please email me to see how you can help make them happen!

I have added the below text to our About page. Your continued membership indicates you have read this and agree to abide by the information:

"You are strongly encouraged to have your first name as your profile name and a picture of yourself. The purpose of this group is to meet and get to know each other IN PERSON. When we meet, we assume you will not introduce yourself as BikingMan or FlowerPower, so why not make your name your profile name? When we meet and make friends, we learn more about veg options in the area, resources and tips others have to share and much more. (side note - profile names that seem to be business names will be deleted as this is advertising)

You are an adult and as such are responsible for your own behavior and safety at all events. The organizers attempt to provide as much information as possible about events so you can make good decisions about attending, but you are ultimately responsible for yourself. If you bring any children, you are responsible for their well-being and safety.

Please carefully read the details of all events before RSVPing Yes or Maybe. Most questions can be answered by reading the description thoroughly. If you have additional questions, please email the organizer of that specific event and make your RSVP decisions accordingly."

I urge you to re-read event details before RSVPing and before emailing or calling with questions. Most answers are there. I am very happy to answer questions and to receive emails from you re events, suggestions, etc. However, please be respectful of my time and read to see if your answer is already there before you email me or the event organizer.

I love this group and have made (and continue to make) so many wonderful friends through it! But this is not a paid position and you guys have no idea the large amount of time I spend on the group. I do so because I want to help the veg community, strengthen our resolve to remain veg, create new veg*ns, make friends, etc. But like you, I am not perfect and will never make every person happy all the time. I just do my best and make adjustments as I can.

This email is not meant to be a downer. This is a great group filled with wonderful people and we have a lot of fun! I am just passing on some tips to make it more fun for all, including me, your organizer. smile

Hope to see you at an event soon!!
