New Year, New Organizer - Same Great Veg Meetup!

Hello Veg meetup members!
I apologize this is a little long, but I ask you please read the whole thing. biggrin

First, as you know our organizer Katya recently passed the baton to me after 4+ years of running this group. I want to thank her heartily for her dedication to this group and for so many wonderful meetups! I know first hand how daunting it can be to organize a group of this size and to juggle restaurant meetups around the Triangle! We owe her a round of applause! If we are lucky, she'll hang around and maybe even set up a dinner from time to time.

Next, I want to thank you for welcoming me into the organizer position. I really enjoy organizing meetups and meeting so many of you! I don't plan to make many changes, but I do welcome suggestions from you all. Is there a restaurant you'd like to go to, a trail you'd like to walk, a social activity we haven't done that we could try? Just email me!

Some of you who have been around for a while may have noticed Katya hasn't collected our dues lately. I'm sorry to say I will have to step into that role. Meetup charges a monthly fee to the group organizer for hosting and managing the website. I wish I could afford to shoulder this cost myself, but I can't. I do want to make it economical for everyone, so dues are $1 per month or you can pay in advance and it's only $7 for the whole year. If by some chance there was a net gain (this never came close to happening with another group I used to run), then any surplus would be funneled back into the group activities.

One last point of business is a reminder: please keep your RSVP updated for events (you don't have to RSVP No, but it does prevent you from getting the email reminders) and please, please, please keep cancellations to a minimum. RSVPing Yes is a commitment to attend an event. We are planning on you being there - we want to see you there! Sometimes we may even wait for you, so it's inconvenient if you don't show. Cancellations a day or two (or even day of) the event should be RARE! In many cases your last minute cancellation may prevent someone else from planning to attend. Also, in the past there have been numerous restaurant meetups where up to half the group does not show. This is embarrassing for the organizer and does not endear us to the restaurant (and may impact their opinion of vegetarians and vegans). In the case of a large restaurant meetup, the restaurant may even have called extra staff in that night. If no shows/last minute cancellations continues to be a concern, we'll have to institute a No Show policy for the group - and I don't want to do that! So just keep this in mind and come out and meetup! smile

I think 2009 will be an exciting year for this group. I've gotten a lot of suggestions for new activities for us - such as doing a potluck/cook out at a picnic shelter/park and even organizing a camping trip. Stay tuned for polls and more info about these topics! And of course, send you feedback my way!

Thank you,

Stephanie - your new organizer
