North by Northwest (matinee)

The Carolina Theatre presents Hitchcock Revisited May 17 – May 30.

North by Northwest (1959) is Alfred Hitchcock at his most effervescent in a romantic comedy-thriller that also features one of the definitive Cary Grant performances. Grant is Roger O. Thornhill, an advertising executive who is mistaken by enemy spies for a U.S. undercover agent. Convinced these sinister fellows (James Mason and Martin Landau) are trying to kill him, Roger flees and meets a sexy Stranger on a Train (Eva Marie Saint). And, of course, there are the famous set pieces: the stabbing at the United Nations, the crop-duster plane attack in the cornfield, and the cliffhanger finale atop the stone faces of Mount Rushmore.

Did a little digging and found this article about the house featured in the movie. Turns out we were right (a Frank Lloyd Wright house) and wrong (imaginary!) at the same time. http://www.jetsetmodern.com/mod...

I also found the title quote, which is indeed from "Hamlet": "I am but mad north by north-west. When the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw." The experts explain it as, "I'm only crazy sometimes. The rest of the time, I know what's what." (Apparently a "handsaw" was not a tool, but a bird of prey which a noble youth acquainted with falconry would be assumed to recognize.) Interesting!

Thanks for posting this. Very interesting point it made that a real Frank Lloyd Wright house would not have the beam support.

One of my favorite Hitchcock films - loved seeing it on the big screen.

Hi, Vera - no, for regular movies like this I don't think they sell tickets in advance.

Is there a way to buy tickets in advance? The online 'box-office' doesn't show this movie on Sunday.

I will not be able to attend this meetup as I got a ticket for an Audubon Bird Cruise out of Wilmington this day. However, Mark has agreed to host. Enjoy!
