Dirty Wars

Dirty Wars is a 2013 American documentary film based on the book Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield by Jeremy Scahill. The film is directed by Richard Rowley based on a screenplay written by Scahill and David Riker.

It’s the dirty little secret of the War on Terror: all bets are off, and almost anything goes. We have fundamentally changed the rules of the game and the rules of engagement. Prior to 9/11, it was customary for America to sound a formal declaration of war on a given country before attacking. Today drone strikes, night raids, and U.S. government–condoned torture occur in hidden corners across the globe, generating unprecedented civilian casualties. Investigative reporter Jeremy Scahill traces the rise of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), the most secret and elite fighting force in U.S. history, exposing covert operations carried out by men who do not exist on paper and will never appear before Congress. No target is off-limits for the JSOC “kill list,” even if the person is a U.S. citizen.

I have a sort of fascination for people who do investigative war journalism (eg Tim Hetherington). I enjoyed Scahill's story/work playing out, however somber it was. Here's an article/video of Nasser al-Awkali speaking out about the death of his grandson: http://www.democracynow.org/2013/6/7/exclusive_nasser_al_awlaki_to_obama.

Running time for the film is just 1 hr 27 mins. If there's enough interest in post-film conversation; we could head over to Lynnwood Grill afterwards.

Interesting commentary below- thnks Henry. Unfortunately I can't make this tonite with unforeseen family issue. This film topic is near and dear to me just as much as is the Snowden affair. Yet our media seems incapable presenting to the public the real facts. Distressing. enjoy

CIVILIAN DEATHS: AFGHAN-well over 100,000 and possibily triple that and climbing and once again almost all from the air. 2 years ago-BBC TV news: 5000 civil. killed in the last year, 4000 by Talliban-perhaps true. "Goebbels" half truth: real civil. deaths 25000 or higher-why they're so scared of wiki leaks, Snowden types..Talliban-most unpopular thing ther've done in rural areas: stop the giving of young girls to settle Hatfield-McCoy squabbles and popular with all ethnic rurals, not just Pashtun. Popular for ending nationwide violence and rape following Soviet withdrawal-establishing law and order, welfare programs, and Sharia law. Most all poor rurals are extremely conservative and Sharia-women customs prdate Islam in Afghan.

US MASS MEDIA, from which most Americans get their info and could care less about these "wars" of which they know so little, so masterfullly hides the truth that you would think JOSEPH GOEBBELS was alive and once again running the half truths to the hilt. ie.: nazi propagander before Poland and US prop. before Afghan invasion to villify the Talliban which are so popular with the very consevative rural populations. I am not an apologist for the Talliban nor would I want to live under any strict rel. govt.: BUT, the Talliban are extremely popular with rural Afghans.

HORROR: US STRATEGY: WHEN FIGHTING A POPULAR INSURGENCY, IE TALLIBAN-"VIET CONG", SHOW THE RURAL POPULATION THERE IS NOTHING, NOTHING YOUR LOCALS HOMEBOYS CAN DO TO PROTECT YOU FROM US-NATO MILITARY MIGHT-AIR POWER, THEN PROCEDE WITH THE SLAUGHTER TO UNDERMINE SUPPORT FOR THE INSURGENCY.
