GREGORY CREWDSON: BRIEF ENCOUNTERS
Director: Ben Shapiro
US / 2012 / 77 minutes

An acclaimed photographer with the eye of a filmmaker, Gregory Crewdson has created some of the most gorgeously haunting pictures in the history of the medium. His meticulously composed, large-scale images are stunning narratives of small-town American life—moviescapes crystallized into a single frame. While the photographs are staged with crews that rival many feature film productions, Crewdson takes inspiration as much from his own dreams and fantasies as the worlds of Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, Edward Hopper and Diane Arbus. Crewdson’s imagery has also infiltrated the pop culture landscape—including his inimitable Six Feet Under ads and Yo La Tengo album art. Shot over a decade with unprecedented access, GREGORY CREWDSON: BRIEF ENCOUNTERS beautifully bares the artist’s process—and it’s as mesmerizing and riveting as the images themselves. It was really amazing to get such a close look at what it takes to be an artist. Elizabeth and Barry, it was nice meeting you! I look forward to meeting more group members and seeing more great films!

Enjoyed seeing how the pictures came together. Lot of creativity and effort goes into Crewdson's art. Was especially struck by the level of effort that went into post-production. Thanks Elizabeth and Katya for the pleasant chat over dinner.

What an interesting film! Thanks for organizing it. I regret I didn't know people, to know who was in the group (I did ask 2 clumps if they were meetup, and one said I could join their very private [non-]meetup), but I'll hope to find who you are in the future.

Thanks, Greg. Sorry I couldn't stay. This was just a rough week.

I enjoyed the talking we did. I hope it gets less rough as you head over the hump :-)

Sorry I missed the Crewdson film, gang. Got caught in a horrendous traffic jam on I-40. Catch you at the next one!

I will try to get there depending on if I get out of the office in time and find a parking space.

Regret I can't join others for a bite this time. I'm looking forward to the film.

Given that the Bulls are playing at the same start time, I might aim to arrive early and get a bite to eat. If anyone wants to join me, just email (or post). I'm looking forward to this movie.

Hi Elizabeth, it's a good idea to get a bite to eat before the movie. I am new to the area so can't really make any suggestions but any place that has a vegetarian dish would be great.

Gregory, I wish I could make it afterwards, but it's the night before a work day, and I need my sleep. Nice idea, though. Also can't make dinner before, coming from Raleigh on a work day (Barry's suggestion), but again, a nice idea. Looking forward to the film.

Would be interested in some dinner before. Open to where. Can be there after 5:45.

I won't have time to eat before the film, but we could go to Tyler's afterwards. Anyone interested?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
