Don Jon

Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes his directorial and writing debut with Don Jon.

Jon Martello is a strong, handsome, good old fashioned guy. His buddies call him Don Jon due to his ability to "pull" a different woman every weekend, but even the finest fling doesn't compare to the bliss he finds alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Barbara Sugarman is a bright, beautiful, good old fashioned girl. Raised on romantic Hollywood movies, she's determined to find her Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset. Wrestling with good old fashioned expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara struggle against a media culture full of false fantasies to try and find true intimacy in this unexpected comedy.

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza

Running Time: 1 hour 30 mins

I don't think I've ever heard a director explain what a movie "meant," but Joseph Gorden-Levitt does in a film review I just read in Time magazine.Okay, this is a from the review.

"His goal, cloaked in sex and comedy, was to talk about how fiction seduces consumers into lusting after ideas rather than human beings. Pornography is just one culprit; the character played by Scarlett Johansson--a woman who talks like Snooki but was inspired by Brigitte Bardot in Godard's French classic Contempt--is just as affected by sappy romances. Advertising images are indicted as well. It's a big idea, the kind Gordon-Levitt knows viewers might ignore without all the sex and comedy. . . . Gordon-Levitt saw the parallel between mass media and pornography while being drooled over in '90s teen magazines. He put some theoretical meat on the concept by taking a Columbia University course called Feminist Texts. . . ."

    I enjoyed seeing everyone..

Awfully lofty ideas ... but still a very good movie.

This is exactly how I interpreted it, so I'm happy to know that was his intent. I agree with Elizabeth that the ideas are lofty, and maybe most people won't "get" it, but it is about time someone exposes Hollywood romance as it is: just as harmful of a fiction as porn is.

Can't add much to the reviews below except that this interesting and entertaining film had many laugh out loud hilarious moments. "You're watching people fuck on your phone".

Surprisingly good film with a smooth transition from the superficial to more layered visions of the main character and relationships, in general.

My first event. I really enjoyed the evening with this friendly group of people. I think Shawna and Sara summed up my thoughts of the movie now that I had time to reflect on it. Hope I will be able to attend more events.

I agree with Shawna. I thought he did a great job highlighting several multi-layered issues that single people actually face in the world of dating/relationships today. It would be great if couples saw it and actually talked about it afterward.

I enjoyed the film. JGL did a great job transforming into DJ character and the character was well done (compulsiveness, addiction, anger, vulnerability, etc). I also like how it wasn't a typical romantic comedy by pairing up the main male character with a woman 20 years his senior.

A pretty good movie overall. It was the right length unlike some movies which drag on too long

Do we need to get tickets ahead of time? I have never been to this theater. Looking forward to it!

I'm not planning on getting my ticket in advance, (however it is an option here: http://www.carmike.co...). Tickets for this show will be $9.50 and Carmike Wynnsong accepts cash, debit and credit cards.
