The Great Beauty

Word on the street (web) says The Great Beauty is opening at the Rialto this weekend; so let's try it again.

Journalist Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo, Il divo and Gomorrah) has charmed and seduced his way through the lavish nightlife of Rome for decades. Since the legendary success of his one and only novel, he has been a permanent fixture in the city's literary and social circles, but when his sixty-fifth birthday coincides with a shock from the past, Jep finds himself unexpectedly taking stock of his life, turning his cutting wit on himself and his contemporaries, and looking past the extravagant nightclubs, parties, and cafés to find Rome in all its glory: a timeless landscape of absurd, exquisite beauty.

A dazzling and ambitious film about the rich and privileged in Rome. Reminiscent of "La Dolce Vita". The soundtrack and cinematography were enchanting and the acting was spectacular. Sitting around over a drink at a local bar after the film, we discussed the film's main character, an acerbic writer whose success came from the only novel he wrote at the beginning of his career. The differences in opinion about him and his life made the film experience even more enjoyable.

One of my favorites of the year. Like a long lyric poem.

An interesting film with much beautiful imagery and a lot of strangeness to piece together and think about. I think I would like to see La Dolce Vita now. I had a nice time at dinner and enjoyed conversation at Crafty afterwards.

I will be doing dinner before the movie at Lilly's, I am not trying to disrupt the plans for a visit afterwards, but dinner that late is difficult for me, so for those that would like to join me, please do so at 6.

For those wanting to go out for a drink afterwards, there's a wonderful American style pub one block away. It offers a wide range of craft beers and a small selection of good wines: http://craftybeershop.com/ .
