The Informers

Let's get together to watch the latest screen adaptation of author Bret Easton Ellis (
American Psycho,
Less Than Zero). We'll meet in the lobby a little before the show starts. Look for Brian in his traditional red shirt.
The Informers USA, 2009, 100 minutes Directed by Gregor Jordan. Starring Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Mickey Rourke, Winona Ryder, Jon Foster, Amber Heard. Sex, drugs, and new wave... Los Angeles in the early 1980s: a time of excess and decadence, and nobody captures it better than Bret Easton Ellis as he coadapts his own acclaimed novel for the screen. Its multistrand narrative deftly balances a vast array of characters, who represent both the top of the heap (a Hollywood dream merchant, a dissolute rock star, an aging newscaster) and the bottom (a voyeuristic doorman and an amoral ex-con). Connecting his intertwining strands are the quintessential Ellis protagonists—a group of beautiful, blonde young men and women who sleep all day and party all night, doing drugs—and one another—with abandon, never realizing that they are dancing on the edge of an abyss. Gregor Jordan (
Two Hands,
Buffalo Soldiers) directs a glamorous and gritty exposé of a culture where too much was never enough. He presents both the seductive and repellent sides of a time when safe sex meant being on the pill. Featuring a truly all-star cast who are at the top of their game,
The Informers is a scathing descent into the morally bankrupt core beneath L.A.'s superficial beauty. It is both titillating and horrifying as it captures an era on the verge of an implosion whose effects we are still feeling today. -- Sundance More:

I didn't like this movie, it was one of those movies that I kept thinking big pieces from the original book was left out, it also felt very dated. Liked the 80's music. Top of the Hill afterwards was fun. Thanks for organizing Brian.

The movie was a little iffy for me, but it was certainly good enough to prompt some interesting discussions at Top of the Hill afterward ;->

I thought it was OK. Kind of reminded me 90210.

An all-star cast doesn't guarantee a great movie. I'd wait for this one to be in Redbox, or the library. It was good, but not $8 good.

Looking forward to it. To keep our group size manageable, I had to cap the RSVPs, and to be fair to everyone, I've made RSVPs Yes/No only from this point forward. Hope to see you there.
