Saguaro West: Search for flowers on Kings Canyon & Hugh Norris

I ran this hike a couple of months ago, but we managed to lose the trail and did some bushwhacking. Fun as that was, I'd like to do the trails this time, and I think the flowers are about as good as they'll get this season. We will hike up Kings Canyon to Wasson Peak, and then loop back via Hugh Norris and Gould (sic) Mine trails. I'd rate this hike intermediate+; the trails are good, but it is 8 miles with quite a bit of elevation gain and some steep switchbacks near the peak.

Distance: About 8 miles round trip

Time: 4-5 hours hiking

Elevation Gain: About 2,000'

For more info go to:

Things to bring:

  • Hat and sunscreen
  • Plenty of water
  • Snacks

We'll carpool from the Albertson's on the NE corner of Speedway & Silverbell. The parking lot is best accessed from Silverbell just north of Speedway. I'll be parked near that entrance - look for my old red Subaru Forester. There is a Starbuck's there for us coffee lovers! Please try to get there a little early so we can leave at 7:30am; I'll be there around 7:20am.

If you'd rather meet at the trailhead, be there at 8:00am. It is on Kinney Road just north of the Desert Museum (click here for a map)

For both meeting spots/times, I'll grant only 5min grace period before leaving. If you're running late at either meeting point, call me:[masked] 7559.

Finally, if you can't make it, even at the last minute, please update your rsvp.

I called the visitor center. Technically you are supposed to pay to use the trails, but they don't patrol that area and ”most people don't pay”. The trailhead and parking area are outside the park boundary, so no need to display anything in the car. If you want to pay you must go to the visitor center.

The notice first said 3 hours but when I read that it's longer, I have a prior commitment that I have to keep. Would much rather be hiking with you all.

FYI (& to my surprise), when I hiked this area (Gould-Esperanza-Dobe TH, I was advised by park staff (at Visitor Center) that this IS a fee area. Natl Senior pass will work here. Naturally, I left mine at home. So $5/person was paid. They want a checkin at the V Center. Maybe call to confirm this.
