Friday Night Sabino Stroll

Come join us for our weekly hike and socializing afterward at Risky Business! This is a great hike for new members. We normally walk up the tram road and enjoy the evening views of the canyon. Most folks turn around after 2 miles, but some hardy folks go the entire 7.4 miles to the end of the tram road and back. Everyone walks at a different pace, and so normally we break up into smaller groups as we are walking.  When we get to the 2 mile rock we usually regroup before returning to the visitor center. The group that leaves at 7pm walks a little faster than 2 miles per hour. The group that leaves at 6 walks even faster, nearly 4 miles per hour. Please consider these speeds and your abilities when deciding to join us. If you cannot keep up, be prepared to hike by yourself.

We are hiking in the dark, so please make sure you have a good flashlight. The rattlesnakes are out.

We'll meet at the ramada (covered patio) in front of the Sabino Canyon Visitor's Center at 7 PM, do a quick round of introductions and start hiking shortly thereafter.

Those wishing to walk the entire road should start with the 6:00 PM group if you intend to join the later starters at Risky Business (Kolb/Sunrise).   Please indicate on your RSVP if you will be joining the 6:00PM group.

Stroll at your own risk. Be prepared for possible rain.

If no host is present at the appointed time (+5 Mins), begin the stroll anyway.

See you there!

Thanks for the memory, it made me laugh! I once watcheda banana slug eating a dried flower petal. Amazed, I fed it another. It was so cool to watch.A friend told me they eat the dried vegetation on the forest floor, helping to keep it clean. They don't eat live plants.

I have family in Washington State, Seattle area. When we would go and visit them we would always go hiking up there. I was always amazed by the banana slugs. I always marveled at how huge they are.

7:00 as well for me. I love to hike all the way up but I like to take it at a relaxed pace so I can actually look at things as well.

I'm new to the area but have hiked Albuquerque's Sandia Mountain several times. I love the outdoors and am a runner but I know hiking enlists different challenges. Looking forward to something different and meeting new people.

I wasn't kidding. I am from the Pacific Northwest, redwoods and such. Newts, frogs and ferns maybe but no rattlers. I guess I should opt out of hikes. It is a phobia. Silly of me but ...

I decided to take your advice and give this hike a try. I may turn around before dark as my night vision is not good. Look forward to my first hike here.

Judy, I would recommend the 7 pm group because the 6 pm group walks really really super fast. And the 7 pm group is larger and you will have people to walk with.

Hi Judy, don't opt out of hikes, just be aware. I moved here from the SF bay area 9 years ago, live next to Sabino Canyon and walk/hike it frequently and have seen a total of 3 rattlers in all that time! Like most wildlife, they don't like people and don't go out of their way to get to know you. I think there is less chance of meeting snakes in the morning before it gets warm so walking then is probably better. Anyway, hope to meet you.

I agree. I also have a slight phobia of snakes. I have been down here for nearly 8 years now and see more snakes around where I live in Vail than I do hiking around on the trails. I respect your decision either way, but I wouldn't let running into a snake deter you from hiking. There are so many beautiful things to see here.

Ironically I have more fear of the non poisonous snakes than I do of rattlers. Why? No clue..Now that is silly...:-)

Are there hikes where we don't find rattle snakes?

    May 25, 2013

    • Don B

Hi Judy, I hope you are only kidding. Around these parts, you always have the chance of seeing rattlesnakes. Just saw one this past Saturday on the Phoneline trail in Sabino Canyon. While there is always a chance of being bitten, it is rare.
