Mt. Wrightson Wildflower Hike: Advanced Hike

Total Length 10.8 miles

Highest Elevation:9453 feet

Lowest Elevation:5420 feet

Elevation Change:4033 feet

Difficulty Rating :A

Best Seasons:Spring Summer Fall

Hiking Time:7 +/- hours

HIKE AT YOUR OWN RISK

Let's wade through the wildflowers on Mt. Wrightson! Although I haven't seen it, as I understand it the last week in September is the peak for the spectacular goldeneye wildflower display on Baldy Saddle. These wildflowers are in bloom as far as the eye can see throughout the Florida Burn area. We'll hike up the Baldy Trail to Josephine Saddle. From Josephine Saddle we'll hike the Old Baldy Trail to Baldy Saddle including the 32 switchbacks between Bellows Spring and the saddle. From Baldy Saddle, it's 0.9 miles and another 13 switchbacks to the summit where we will enjoy a spectacular 360 degree view of southern Arizona. Assuming summit conditions are comfortable, we'll take our lunch break on top of the world for at least 30 minutes. On descent we'll either take the Super Trail from Josephine Saddle or Old Baldy depending on our timing. This hike is rated D2 and is for experienced hikers only who can handle 4,000+ feet of elevation gain. That being said we will hike at our own pace meeting up at the saddles and then the top. I am on the slower side so faster hikers feel free to lead. This is a long hike so be sure to bring plenty of food, water, an extra clothing layer for the summit, and rain gear if there is more than a 0% chance of rain. Figure on the hike taking 7-8 hours.

Madera Canyon is approximately 35 miles south of the I-19/I-10 interchange. Head south on I-19 to exit 63 (Continental Road/Madera Canyon). Turn left onto Continental Road and head east through one traffic light and across the Santa Cruz River bridge to the four-way stop at Whitehouse Canyon Road. Turn right on Whitehouse Canyon Road and continue straight ahead on the paved road all the way to Madera Canyon. (Note: Whitehouse Canyon Road changes name to Madera Canyon Road near the Box Canyon junction. Just keep going on the paved road). Continue driving all the way up through Madera Canyon to the loop at the end of Madera Canyon Road known as the Mt. Wrightson Picnic Area (aka Roundup). The Old Baldy trailhead is at the center of this loop. Meet here by 7:30 am. Those coming from Tucson may want to carpool. I would be willing to carpool from the Quick Trip at Grant and I-10.

Hi All! Looks like we've had a fair amount of attrition since I last logged on. Couple things: We have two spots for people to carpool from the QuikTrip on Grant if anyone wants to and although this is a long hike some of us will be taking it slowly (like me!) but we all need plenty of water. This is particularly important if you're not used to the desert heat. I would bring at least 3 liters per person maybe more and some food including salty snacks. Bill also mentioned bringing bug spray and long pants. See ya tomorrow!

Mesia, I will be traveling with Margaret from the East Side. Therefore -- I will NOT be carpooling -- with you at the Quick Trip. I will see you and the rest of our hikers at the Madera / Old Baldy Trail Head -- Bob

    September 20, 2013

    • Bob W.

Margaret, well... it looks like you ARE going ! I would suggest we meet at the LARGE parking lot just North of Freeway 10 on Houghton Avenue. This lot is on the WEST ( California Side ) of Houghton. I would say we should be there at 6:30 AM. If this doesn't work for you -- please let me know -- and I will meet up with Mesia at the Quick Mart . -- Bob Phone =[masked]

    Hi all,

Still looking to car pool if anyone has an extra spot in their vehicle.

I didn't get any response to my Far East side car pool request :(

So...since everyone will pass by Midvale Medical Center on their ride to the Madera Canyon Trailhead -- perhaps someone is willing to stop and let me ride with them from there ?

Here is where I am talking about:

I will pay my share in gas !

    Thanks ! -- Bob

I thought I would be ready for this hike but I think I need to get in a few more shorter hikes first. Hope you do this hike again later this year.

    September 20, 2013

    • Mesia

Hi Denise! I like to do this again when there is snow. The next one I post will be a bit less ambitious. I'm just exited to see the wildflowers.

    • Denise B.

Awesome!! Yeah I'm sure the wildflowers are abundent. Can't wait to see the posted pictures. Hope to see you soon.

      September 20, 2013

  • Margaret C.

Is there any chance of getting a ride as I'm coming form far east vail

    September 17, 2013

    • Mesia

Hi Margaret, The organizer sets a limit to the number of people that can attend the hike for a variety of reasons. When you see an invitation you can accept and you will be added to the attending group above. People that accept after the group are full are put on a wait list. If people drop out the program adds people from the wait list to the attending group and sends them an e-mail. With 7 waiting for this hike it's fair to say that they probably all wont all make it but in my experience there is always a few last minute drop outs.

Mesia thank you for the info now I understand looks like I wont be going theirs always another time

Car Pool -- From East Side ? -- I will be leaving from the Hougton / Rita Ranch area. Looking to carpool with someone. I could also meet at the Midvale Park area on I-19. Any Interest ? -- Bob

All, I see that Mesia explained this hike very well in her write up above. But the details may be lost in all of the text. This is 11 to 13 miles with over 4,000' of gain. An advanced hike that is done at high elevation ( 5,400' to 9,400' ) If you haven't regularly been doing 5-7 hour hikes at higher elevations - with SIGNIFICANT elevation gain -- you may want to consider something less demanding as you work towards being conditioned for this type of hike. -- Bob

I will probably see you guys on the trail but I'm bringing my well behaved pup and since this meetup isn't including animals, I'll just do my own thing and hopefully run into some of you on the trail. Be safe!

Just hiked Florida Canyon trail and Bog Springs/Kent Springs loop this weekend in Madera and the wildflowers are great. You should be aware that chiggers are plentiful as well. Several in my party, including me, got many bites. Suggest using a good DEET repellant and long pants. Nasty little buggers!

I was up Mt Wrightson yesterday and hiked up via the Cave Creek Trail/Crest Trail and back down the Super Trail/Gardner Canyon trail. There were wildflowers galore! Be aware that the Super Trail is recovering from the 2005 Florida fire so is exposed and hot on a clear summer day.

I hiked this last September and it was definitely a personal challenge but so amazing. I am thrilled to meet the group and to hike this again!
