Friday Night Sabino Stroll

Come join us for our weekly hike and socializing afterward at Risky Business! This is a great hike for new members. We normally walk up the tram road and enjoy the evening views of the canyon. Most folks turn around after 2 miles, but some hardy folks go the entire 7.4 miles to the end of the tram road and back. Everyone walks at a different pace, and so normally we break up into smaller groups as we are walking.  When we get to the 2 mile rock we usually regroup before returning to the visitor center. The group that leaves at 7pm walks a little faster than 2 miles per hour. The group that leaves at 6 walks even faster, nearly 4 miles per hour. Please consider these speeds and your abilities when deciding to join us. If you cannot keep up, be prepared to hike by yourself.

We are hiking in the dark, so please make sure you have a good flashlight. The rattlesnakes are out.

We'll meet at the ramada (covered patio) in front of the Sabino Canyon Visitor's Center at 7 PM, do a quick round of introductions and start hiking shortly thereafter.

Those wishing to walk the entire road should start with the 6:00 PM group if you intend to join the later starters at Risky Business (Kolb/Sunrise).   Please indicate on your RSVP if you will be joining the 6:00PM group.

Stroll at your own risk. Be prepared for possible rain.

If no host is present at the appointed time (+5 Mins), begin the stroll anyway.

See you there!

I parked at the school and had no problems, none of the cars along the street had tickets on them.

Aside from the parking situation, the walk was great.

We had a good hike saw a skunk, 2 ring tailed cats, and several scorpions. We parked in a lot a little south of the park and no issues. As usual the news media create drama and exaggerate the issue.

I've been reading more and reports of ticketing and towing for parking on Sabino canyon road, so be aware this may be happening. I'm currently planning to try to park at the school, but this may not be an option. I have no informed advice for where to park. Hopefully the idiot tea party leaders in the house can stop being children so we can resume our hikes as normal soon. The hike will happen, one way or another.

    October 4, 2013

    • Kim

I would like to ride with you and avoid ticketing altogether ;)

The house has passed individual bills to fund national parks and monuments and to pay military. It's the senate and the executive branch that are holding out. Just saying!

    I'm out too. Next week?

    October 4, 2013

The school has signs posted prohibiting parking, and I'm guessing that the sherrif's office is going to see this as a revenue opportunity. I'm officially pulling out. You're all adults, so I'm not going to tell you that you can't go, but I recommend skipping it and letting your elected representatives know how unhappy you are. Of course, we need to bear in mind that not being able to hike is very minor compared to what many thousands of others are having to deal with.

I am going to pull out as well:-( We'll see how next week goes.

If we car pool, where do the drivers park? Or do they just not hike with the group?

    October 4, 2013

    Don't need to get towed

    October 4, 2013

  • Philip M.

I plan to go despite the closure. Its been widely publicized in the local news that people are continuing to hike in Sabino, and it is evident to me that there are no legal issues with doing so. As has been mentioned, the parking lot is closed, so we will have to park outside on the road and walk in. We may be limited on space, so carpooling from the nearby bashas parking lot may be a good idea. I don't recommend parking at the school. Note that the restrooms will all be closed, so you'll want to sort that out before or after :)
