Mid-Week Aspen Draw/Marshall Gulch Foliage Hike

  • October 16, 2013 · 8:00 AM

Let's check out the fall colors. We may be a little early but there should be some color. I hope some of you will join me. We did the same hike last year and it was great.

This will require a car shuttle. We will begin the hike at the Aspen Draw trailhead which is at the end of Turkey Run Rd in Summerhaven. We will need to leave a car at the Marshall Gulch parking lot and then return to the Aspen Draw trailhead.
Aspen Draw is a pretty trail that parallels the ski run on Mt Lemmon. It is about 1.5 miles to the top of the ski area. We then continue on the Aspen trail to the Marshall Saddle. This part of the trail is pretty steep and treacherous. I recommend hiking poles. From there we will hike back down the Marshall Gulch trail. We'll then use the car left at the Marshall Gulch parking lot to take drivers back to Turkey Run to retrieve the other cars.
This hike is not recommended for beginners.

We'll meet at Le Buzz and carpool.

Distance - about 4-5 miles
Elevation gain - around 1200 ft
Hike time - 2-3 hours depending on breaks to take photos

Bring 2 liters of water and a snack.
Sunscreen
Hiking poles (optional)
A hat
Camera

I prefer that you leave your dogs at home.

As always, you will be hiking at your own risk.

Guys, I hiked in Bear Wallow on Sunday and the colors were very nice. Our hike should be beautiful.
The gate near Marshall Gulch is closed so we'll have to walk back up the road about 1/4 mile to get to our cars after the hike. No biggie, we're hikers after all.

Hiked the Sweetwater Trail to Wasson Peak on the first day of the shutdown, they had a barricade there...I walked around it. I think the Tea Party would approve!

Is the gate down to the Marshall Gulch parking and picnic area open? Because it would change things a bit if it is closed...

That is a good question. Not sure how to find out. We'd have to walk an extra 1/4 mile or so.

If the gov't is still shut down, the restrooms at Marshall Gulch will be closed. However, the restrooms at the community center should be open.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
