Blackett's for Beginners

Time: 8:00 AM
Distance: 6.2 miles
Elevation Gain: 1,810 feet (and steep)

NOTE: Due to El Tour, this hike has been moved to Sunday morning.

Blackett's is NOT a beginner's hike, but some members have expressed an interest in making their first climb up Blackett's.  This hike up Blackett's will not be race.  We will be taking our time for those who are new to Blackett's.   This hike is also open to members who have hiked Blackett's in the past.

For those of you not familiar with Blackett's, this is a tough steep hike and you should only sign up if you are reasonably fit and/or have been hiking regularly.   If you are only doing the Friday Night Stroll, you are not ready for Blackett's.   If you haven't hiked Blackett's, you are missing some incredible views of the canyon.  This trail is fully exposed to the sun.  You may also encounter centipedes, baby fawns, and/or rattlesnakes.

We will break at the top before heading down.

  • 3 liters of water

Great hike. Some steep sections but they aren't so long as to deter. Many comfortable places to take a break, catch your breath and enjoy the views. View from the top is gorgeous and varied. Definitely worth it.

Awesome, but need more training. Are you doing more beginner hikes?

According to the online El Tour map, the first cyclist won't come by until about 9, and the last 12:30. By the time a "beginner's Blackett's" is done, the El Tour won't be an issue.

I probably should have looked at the El Tour map. But since I have already changed it to Sunday, I'll leave it there. Thanks, Bruce.

I've never known El Tour to be an issue in Sabino.

Barbara, Good point, the race comes west down Synder then turns right going North on Sabino Canyon road then turns left heading west on Sunrise. The police holds up traffic for a long time to let the riders to got through. I would thing at that time in the morning there will lots of bike coming through.
