Dog Friendly Hikes in the Tucson Hiking Group

To all Organizers and Members,

Due to some recent events, I need to address the issue of dogs on hikes.  There are two important issues:

1) Some people don't want to be around dogs, e.g. they may be allergic to them.
2) Many trails around Tucson don't permit dogs.

For all Organizers, when you post a dog friendly hike, please be sure to say that in the description.  Also, be sure that dogs are allowed on the trail that you will be hiking on.  As a group, we need to follow all local, state, and federal regulations regarding dogs.

For all Members, a hike is only dog friendly if it explicitly says it is.  Please don't show up with your dog unless it is a dog friendly hike.

Also, for dog friendly hikes, owners are responsible for keeping their dog on a leash at all times and any waste must be picked up and disposed of properly.

Those of you who know me know that I LOVE dogs.  But we must respect all regulations and we must be considerate of our fellow hikers.

As always, get out there and enjoy this magical place we call home.

There is a meetup group called Tails and Trails which is for people and their pooches who love hiking. We go on trails open to dogs in the Tucson area please give us a look, we usually do a hike every weekend.

Here is some specific info on hiking with dogs in the Tucson area.
Info is from:
Hiking With Dogs in the Greater Tucson Area from the National Park Service

* Saguaro National Park: Not permitted on most trails
* Tucson Parks and Recreation Department: Permitted if leashed
* Pima County Parks and Recreation Department: Not permitted in Tucson Mountain Park
* Arizona State Parks: Allowed if leashed.
* Coronado National Forest: Allowed most areas if leashed. Dogs are not allowed in the
Pusch Ridge Wilderness Area or Sabino Canyon Recreation Area.
* Buenos Aires NWF: Allowed if leashed
* BLM Tucson Office: Allowed if leashed.

Always call for specific information regarding dogs on trails in ANY area as some restrictions apply and regulations may vary from area to area in any jurisdiction.

Just a small correction to Mike's info, dogs are allowed in the Pusch Ridge Wilderness, however they are excluded from the Bighorn Sheep Management Area which lies within part of the Pusch Ridge Wilderness. There is a map in the files section I uploaded in the files section that shows the Sheep Management Area.
