Showtimes: Thursday, November 4, 2010 - 9:00pm Thursday, November 11, 2010 - 4:15pm Director(s): Anurag Kashyap Country(ies): India Run Time: 144 Language(s): Hindi / English Tickets (first Screening): PURCHASE TRAILER Director Anurag Kashyap Present for Opening Night Film THAT GIRL IN YELLOW BOOTS! This is Bollywood for the new young urban India, a modern generation jammed between its eastern roots and western sensibilities. Derived from Bollywood extravaganzas, Dev, Paro, and Chanda are 20-something young Indians who go from rustic, colorful Punjab and its native ballads, to a riot of neon in the underbelly of New Dehli. Maverick director Anurag Kashyap has taken on his shiny mainstream industry in this breakthrough for independent “new wave” Indian cinema. DEV. D is a modern interpretation of the classic novel "Devdas" by Sarat Chandra. Dev, Paro and Chanda of DEV. D reflect the sensibilities, conflicts, aggression, independence, free thought, exuberance, recklessness of the youth of today. A generation that is jammed between eastern roots and western sensibilities. DEV. D is set in the rustic and colorful Punjab and also explores the dingy, morbid, dark underbelly of Delhi. It takes us from sprawling mustard fields to a riot of neon; from Punjabi ballads to mayhem in rock. (Production Notes) Print Source: Courtesy UTV Communications
Thursday, November 11 @ 4:15PM screening is FREE!

Ashley and Angela, glad you made it! I was there, almost in the front. I'll be there again today. Ashley, go and check out Devdas (director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali ) at library or on Netflix. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devdas_(2002_film)

and also see Bimal Roy's version

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devdas_(1955_film)

And then go back to see the funky Dev D again to understand how director Kashyap took a mod twist on the classic tale. The "sex worker" is a character from the original novella, and the previous versions of the movie, though in those versions she's a nautch girl/brothel dancer. I remember when I first saw Devdas, being new to Hindi films, I though,"But why CAN'T he just marry that great dancer?" not knowing she was a lady of the night. So anyway, why Leni/Chandramuki appeared in the movie was just all part of the original story.

It was interesting, I don't think I fully understood the movie. I was confused when the sex girl got involved. I didn't get how she related to the rest of the story. I loved the music in it though.
