Wine tasting at Sunfish

A combo wine and comedy event. We'll do a guided tasting at Sunfish starting at 5, then we'll move next door to Joke Joint for the 8 PM show. You can do either or both. Because of this, I have separate signups. If you want to go to the Joke Joint, please signup for that meetup as well.

First the tasting. Mike Dombrow of Sunfish Celllars will be leading us in a Zinfandel tasting. There will probably also be some Primitivo there as well. What there won't be there is white Zinfandel. There is no white Zinfandel. Zinfandel is red.

The cost will be $25. This will include a cheese and meat plate (this type of thing usually would cost 15-20 if you were to order it in the wine bar) and about 1/2 bottle of wine each. The tasting should last around 2 hours. Mike will be talking about a wine, then opening it, then we'll taste, and move on to the next. Those of you who have done some of the wine bar tastings, will recognize $25 as a bargain. The rest of you will just have to trust me. It's a deal.

When we're done, there will be an opportunity to buy your favorites to take home or take over to the Joke Joint. Or you can put it in a paper bag and drink it in your car in the parking lot. I don't judge.

Joke Joint. The show is at 8. We'll aim to get over there about 7:30. We should have the balcony to ourselves. We can bring wine in from Sunfish for a $12 corkage fee. The comedian is Dave Mordal. Here's a link to a Dave Mordal video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgbM3KOCcv4

Can anyone tell me the name/year of the second wine we drank at Sunfish? Alas, my little booklet disappeared while I wasn't looking!

I was a little worried about Mike at first. That whole establish order thing. I have authority issues. I don't like anyone telling me what to do unless they let me put on the furry handcuffs first. But it turned out great. We'll be back. I was suprised to find out that Mike is s sommelier. He didn't look Muslim or African.

What the heck is and sorry I missed Mike, the sommelier

Really enjoyed the wine tasting. Mike, the sommelier, was funny and knowledgeable. Great time!

    Continued:
    9) Do I need to buy tickets in advance for the Joke Joint?
    A) No. No. No.
    10) Are are seat reserved at the Joke Joint?
    A) We have the entire balcony. It's like our own private bar. It seats 40 and Ken said he'd find us a couple more seats if need be. Currently 43 are signed up. I've capped the signups, and despite my pleas, there will be some last minute cancellations. We'll be fine.
    11) Really? Are you sure? I haven't been able to sleep all night worrying about whether I'll have a seat. I am one of those people who, even though I'm in boarding group 10, stand in line at walkway door an hour before they start boarding.
    A) A comedy and wine meetup may not be for you. I think there's a Xanax and Valium meetup you may want to look into.
    12) How did you become such a patient person?
    A) I date Sarah.

What are we tasting? I mean, wine, I know. Do you know which wines?

I am really disappointed. I.caught a bad cold (I know who gave it to me). I was hoping I would feel better as the day progressed. But, I feel lousy and the pleasures of wine & cheese would be wasted on me. So, I must change my RSVP to "no."

Hey Gary, any chance I could get a "cheese only" plate, no meat, for my tasting? I know, I know, picky picky.

    March 22, 2013

    • Gary

Chris I suspect that there will just be a bunch of cheese, meat, and bread / crackers that we can grab from. If I am wrong (and really I'm just guessing as I never discussed the presentation with Mike), and we each get individual plates, I'll happily trade you some of my cheese for your meat.

Oh and I hope we will be tasting White Zinfandel, the kind that is the pretty pink color. :-)

Ya know what Gary? When u retire from this Wine and Comedy host job you may have a future in comedy-- might give Dave Mordahl a run for his money. Your FAQ made me laugh! I think u got FAQ #12 backwards though. LOL

    March 23, 2013

  • Gary

I've got a few emails and comments on this. So here, for you all, is an FAQ.
    1) Are there separate signups for Joke Joint and the wine tasting?
    A: Yes.
    2) Do I need to sign up for both?
    A) Only if you want to go to both.
    3) How much is the wine tasting?
    A $25
    4) When do I pay for the wine tasting?
    A) Some time after you get there. Mike will be asking for money. When he does, cough it up.
    5) Is there a discount on wine I buy today?
    A Yes. 10%
    6) Can I bring wine to the Joke Joint?
    A) Yes. The Joke Joint does charge a $12 corkage fee if you have a receipt from Sunfish (normal corkage is $15).
    7) If I have my own wine opener, can I avoid the $12 corkage fee?
    A) If you try that, not only will you avoid the corkage fee, but you will avoid the cover charge as you'll be sent home by one of Ken giant bouncers.
    8) How much is the Joke Joint?
    A) For us, tonight, for the 8 PM show only, it is $7.50 (normally $15).

    March 23, 2013

  • Gary

One last reminder - update your RSVP if you're not going. Mike needs to have a correct count so that he has the right amount of food and wine for our group. And try to make your decision 24 or more hours out. That would be by the end of the day Friday. Thanks.

    March 21, 2013

    • Gary

Laurie, I just added your plus one.

    Gary,
Sounds like a lot of fun. FYI: I just paid for my ticket to the Joke Joint. Cost was $15 + 2.50 handle cost. I didn't know what seating to pick, so I picked no preference. Also Joke Joint wants you to print your receipt to pick up tickets at door if you purchased online.

This will be a great way to kick off spring break!

    March 16, 2013

    • Gary

I'm sorry for the confusion. Initially, I only had the wine tasting meetup posted while I was working out some details on the Joke Joint. I did note that there was going to be a separate signup for that. Anyway, I've reworded some things to try and make it clearer. When you get there, we'll talk to Ken and see if he can do anything on the ticket.

      March 17, 2013

    • Swag

It's ok now. I actually have called and talked to them myself. I have options. I'm good to go.

    March 14, 2013

    • kym

      Congrats on the new job.

      March 17, 2013

  • Gary

Just a reminder - if you want to go to the Joke Joint, you need to sign up for that separately under the Joke Joint Meetup I have scheduled (don't buy your own tickets unless you want to spend more). I know most people have already signed up for the Joke Joint meetup, but not everyone, and I want to be sure that those who haven't signed up for the Joke Joint, don't want to go.
I'm going to change the title of this to event to only include wine tasting.

    March 16, 2013

  • Gary

I just put the Joke Joint on the calendar. We're getting 1/2 price admission and will have pretty much the entire balcony to ourselves (there is a full bar up there too, in case you want something other than wine). We'll head over about 7:30. You will need to sign up for that meetup separately. If you want to bring wine from Sunfish, the corkage fee is a reduced rate of $12 with a receipt (it's normally $15).

    February 6, 2013

    • Swag

So since I ordered my ticket online and paid $17.50, will they refund me the difference?

      March 16, 2013

    • Gary

I have no clue. I kind of doubt it, but you'll have to talk to them. Maybe they'll let you use your full price ticket at another show. Maybe. Dunno. Not up to me. I just set up the meetup.

      March 16, 2013

  • Gary

Good news. Mike is giving us a 10% on any wine purchased after the tasting.
Here is the lineup (in general terms):
    One Ridge.
    One Mendocino Zin.
    One Sonoma Zin.
    One Washington State Zin.
    One Primativo.
    One Napa.
    One Secret Surprise.

    NO WHITE ZIN.

Gary, found out my friends are coming from Nebraska and need to cancel my reservation. Sure you have a waiting list. Have fun.

    March 14, 2013

    • Gary

I do. No problem. Thanks for the advance notice.

      March 14, 2013

  • Gary

Just a reminder so that no one gets there and things they're providing free wine. The cost is $25 per person. You pay Mike when you get there (or at whatever point he decides to collect). Any wine you buy will be on top of that of course. I'm going to check and see if we can get a discount, at least on the ones we taste.

    March 13, 2013

  • Sandie S.

It is with great sadness that I'm unable to join in with the laughs and giggles at the Joke Joint. To the next person on the waiting list......... Enjoy the show!!

If anyone is already on the list to go to Dave Mordal and are still on the wait list to Sunfish, let me know.

    February 22, 2013

    • Gary

Ok, I think I took care of everyone who is signed up for Joke Joint but was on the waitlist for Sunfish. Everyone except John that is. John, I'm not clear whether you want to go because you have a comment about only wanting Joke Joint, but you are on the waitlist for Sunfish, so I just left you where you are (on the waitlist).

Just want to go to the Joke Joint, bringing a guest

    February 22, 2013

  • Gary

John, on the waiting list - remove the +1. You'll get passed over if you leave it on. Just note that you're bringing a guest and I'll make it work out. This goes for anyone on any automatic waiting list - don't do the +1 thing.
