Fasten your seat-belts and get ready for a fast and furious ride!!!
Here is the a link to our ride course:
We will start with a half mile warm up hike to our first good scramble and end with one!
Just a heads up...this hike does involve some mild Class 3 scrambling. About 40% of this 8.5 mile hike will be scrambling.
Though I don't like exposure, there are some spots that the timid may get nervous....trust me...if you're a scrambler and I can do it...you can do it.
This is a fun hike that has a little bit of everything. There's a fair ascent, some loose gravel, a little scrambling and even some bouldering.
Along the way we'll see just about every color and combination of colors that Calico has to offer.
This hike has a fair amount of elevation gain so plan for some work for your lungs.
We will hit the trail at 8:00 sharp. Please be on time.
Distance: ~ 8.5 mile loop.
Total Ascent:[masked] ft.
High Point: 4531
Low Point: 3580
Pace: 2.5 - 3 Miles Per Hour
Children: no. Dogs: no.
Time: 5-6 hours max.
Bring: At least two liters of water & Snacks.
Starting from the Red Springs picnic area we'll head out through the pass to the left of Kraft Mountain, down into the wash, up the wash, turn left (South) towards "gateway" to Sandstone Quarry. We'll stop there for a while for some views.
From there we'll simply hike back along the Canyon side of the Calicos around the Southeast side of Calico, returning to Red Springs.
We will stop for a little snack at the hidden Arch.
I recommend bringing some sort of food and/or snack. Water is essential.
If I don't know you, then please don't be offended if I ask to check your water supply. I just want to make sure everybody has enough before we go.
We'll meet at the Red Springs picnic area close to the trailhead at the Northwest side of the parking lot.
To get to Red Springs, take the Calico Basin turnoff, which is about 2 miles before the Red Rock Loop entrance. Follow the road down to the Red Springs Parking lot.
Stay together on hikes.
As an Organizer, I feel it's my job to make sure nobody gets left behind. If a hiker falls behind and loses contact with the group, that hiker can more easily become lost or injured. If we can't see him, we can't help him. As an Organizer, I take steps to try to prevent that from happening. But the same can happen to those who venture out ahead. Do you know our planned route? Many trails have multiple paths leading to the same place. If we take one route and you take another, you run the same risks as those listed above. You came out to hike with us, so hike WITH us.
The $2 for me is always optional and extremely appreciated. Hiking is free, but we spend hours researching, exploring, planning, writing, posting, and following up on events. We answer emails, phone calls, and texts. We're happy to teach you new trails and techniques, and build a community that's safe and friendly
