CHRISTMAS DAY "House Party" (The Central - Bathurst/Bloor)

Join us for a fun afternoon Christmas Day "house party" and early dinner at a century-old home that has been converted into a cafe/bar in downtown Toronto.

The Central is opening its doors to us for a holiday gathering that will feature great conversation, a fabulous Christmas dinner, seasonal drinks, a contest and screenings of silent subtitled movies. Mingling will take place on two storeys of the cafe, which is a well known hot spot for Toronto's arts community.

THE PARTY: This event will bring together about 100 people as 11 meetup groups join forces to make this the best Christmas Day ever! The idea is for no one to spend Christmas alone!

WHAT TO WEAR / CONTEST: You can dress up or go casual, but dress in something warm because the venue is very old and could be drafty if it's a cold day. Whatever you wear, please include a garment or assessory that is a "conversation piece". It can be something eye-catching, tacky, creative, funny -- or whatever your imagination conjures up! It can tie into the holiday season, or be something completely unrelated. Prizes will be awarded to members wearing the best conversation pieces!

BOARD GAMES: If you aren't the mingling type, you can hang out with other members in a quiet upstairs games room and play games like chess, Monopoly, cards, fussball, etc. The Central has some games, but there could be pieces missing so bring your own board game to be sure!

WHEN: Sunday, December 25, 2011

TIME: 2 to 6 p.m. (Dinner will be served anytime you want.)

LOCATION: The Central, 603 Markham Street, Toronto, Ontario (about one and a half blocks southwest of the Bathurst station on the Bloor-Danforth subway line)

PRICE: Christmas dinner is $22 (plus tax and service charge). You can also order drinks individually priced on the menu. Please order something substantial, and be generous with your tips, because The Central's staff is working on Christmas Day especially for you!

If you can, please pay cash for your dinner and drinks. The Central accepts credit and debit cards, but it will slow down the payment process if everyone wants to use plastic. So, if possible, please pay cash.

TO BOOK: RSVP yes on this event. Indicate on your RSVP comment whether you'll be having Christmas dinner because The Central needs to know the numbers so it can plan.

MEETUP ARRANGEMENTS: Meet John inside The Central, near the front entrance, beginning at 2 p.m. He looks like his photo. If you're late, look for John on the main floor or upstairs.

CHRISTMAS DINNER: You won't go hungry! You can choose from any of the following: roast turkey, roast beef, vegetarian lasagna, vegetarian chili, Caesar salad, house salad, coleslaw, creamed corn, mashed potatoes, sweet potato mash, cranberry sauce, stuffing, gravy and dinner rolls. There will also be two homemade soups (butternut and cream of mushroom). For dessert: ice cream and pie. Drinks are extra.

SEASONAL DRINKS: You can order mulled wine (warm wine with fresh fruit like apples and peaches), hot chocolate, hot apple cider, egg nog, latte, beer and other alcohol from the bar.

BY TTC: Take the Bloor-Danforth subway line to Bathurst station. Walk to the south side of Bloor Street, then walk one block west on Bloor until you reach the end of the Honest Ed's block. Turn south (left) on Markham Street (heading into the heart of Mirvish Village) and look for The Central at 603 Mirvish Street, right beside Suspect Video, which is next to the south side of Honest Ed's.

PARKING: Metered parking is available on Bloor, Bathurst and Markham Streets. A city parking lot is located just north of Bloor on Markham Street. A private lot is located on Lennox Street.

AFTER-PARTY MOVIE MEETUP: After the party, you can join a meetup to see The Adventures of Tintin (movie starts at 7:30 p.m.) at the AMC Cinemas at Yonge/Dundas and out for a snack afterwards. The meetup time is 6:30 p.m. See Mathew at the party for details.

Thank you to everyone for making this event a success. Thank you to The Central for opening its doors to us on Christmas Day. Thank you to the Two Right Feet members who helped out at the event -- Nada who stood by the door and greeted people as they entered, John, Richard and Salpy who checked in members from 10 groups as they arrived and Esmond who helped facilitate conversations. Thank you to everyone who attended. Congratulations to the nine winners of the "conversation piece" contest.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
