Kayak Montenegro’s Kotor Bay, Adriatic Coast, Skadar Lake National Park and hike along the trails left by Napoleon’s armies.
Only half an hour away from Dubrovnik lies Montenegro, the lessor touched gateway to the Adriatic sea.
The unjustly neglected natural beauty of Montenegro is second to none throughout the continent.
The lack of tourist masses is to our advantage as this historic county offers a fantastic alternative for those who still want to enjoy the Mediterranean coast but without both the madding crowds…and their accompanying expense!
..and when it comes to venturing to the best that Montenegro has to offer in one single itinerary, for the discerning traveler, you know it has to be done the uDare way!
Visit the 12th century UNESCO site of Kotor, tucked away on one of South Eastern Europe’s largest fjords, it’s fortifications to this day protecting beautiful palaces, tranquil squares and impressive religious buildings.
Lake Skadar is a wild wonder waiting to be explored. A vast freshwater lake straddling the borders of Albania and Montenegro and surrounded by the dramatic Karst mountains. Its mirrored waters, rocky shores and wetlands play host to a myriad of wildlife with more than 260 species of birds, traditional fishing villages, islet monasteries and pristine beaches.
We will be based in 2 accommodations (Herceg Novi and Virpazar) which serve as the starting and finishing points each day. A short coach transfer takes us to the locations where the Kayaking & Hiking start and finish.
The kayak journeys are for both beginners and accomplished paddlers.
Throughout the trip there will be plenty of opportunity for swimming, relaxing/resting, along with options (included in the price) to take sightseeing walks in coastal cities and towns, as the WHOLE kayaking and hiking programs are led by local experienced and licensed guides.
All the kayaks are tandem ‘sit on top’ style, so teaming up with a partner to enjoy the vista and share the effort will make for easier, nicer paddling for you ;-)
DAY 1 - Arrive Dubrovnik airport. (* You may wish to separately spend an extra night in this notoriously beautiful city before or after the uDare event)
Transfer to Herceg Novi (we spend 4 nights here)
DAY 2- We start the adventure with a full day scenic kayak tour. It starts in Herceg Novi and crosses over the bay to Rose, a small typical Montenegrin fishing village with cafes and restaurants. After a small break here we head over to the submarine tunnels for a paddle in and out. Then it is off to Dobrec, a blue flag beach. Dobrec Beach can only be reached by boat and is a popular destination for our kayakers. It is rustic and beautiful beach with a great restaurant on location. From Dobrec or before reaching Dobrec a paddle to Mamula Island where there is spectacular bird life and an old fort to explore. Mamula island has a fort on it, built by Austro-Hungarian general Lazar Mamula in mid 19th century. During World War II, the fort was used as a prison by Italians. Now disused you will swim and explore the island at your leisure.
DAY 3- Visit to the old town of Kotor, then half day kayaking.
Today we'll explore the majestic bay of Kotor by sea kayak, called “One of the ten most beautiful bays in the world.” Surrounded by high mountains, the bay has for centuries given shelter to the voyagers from all over the Mediterranean . We’ll experience the bay first hand and in true style by sea-kayaking!
In the afternoon, we’ll arrive to the old town of Kotor, also known as ‘Little Dubrovnik’, exploring the small medieval alleyways.
DAY 4 – Guided hike in Lovcen National Park
Transfer to Lovcen for an approximately 14km guided hike in the stunning Lovcen National Park, then transfer to Virpazar where we’ll be based for the remainder of the trip. Our hike will be around 60% through ancient forest on easy trails and 40% on more strenuous but not too difficult mountainside with spectacular views across to Budva and the Adriatic.
The Lovcen National Park is an area of powerful contrasts, on one side tower rugged snow capped mountains, while opposite them you’ll find the quiet tranquility of one of the most beautiful bays in the world.
We will visit on the top of the Lovcen a grand Mausoleum. It is reached by 461 stone steps and gives commanding views of the northern mountain ranges, Skadar Lake and Albania.
DAY 5 - Half Day Hiking / Optional afternoon Wine Tasting at vineyard
Our hike will lead to the ancient, small village of Godinje. This interesting historical little place also has uniquely beautiful views across the lake. From there the group will have options to hike further as much as you wish, visit a local vineyard or chill for the rest of the day - the guide will explain all the options.
DAY 6 - Full day kayaking - Karuč to Rijeka Crnojevica
Skadar Lake, the last habitat of pelicans in Europe, the biggest bird reservation in Europe, one of the last freshwater marshes in the Mediterranean and the largest freshwater lake in Europe.
We will explore the wild beauty of Montenegro this day. An incredible guided paddle from the picturesque village of Karuč to Rijeka Crnojevića via the wonderous serpentine channels of Pavlova Strana, one of Montenegro's most famous vistas.
