Portugal, in Southern Europe, shares the Iberian peninsula at the western tip of Europe with Spain. Geographically and culturally somewhat isolated from its neighbor, Portugal has a rich, unique culture, lively cities and beautiful countryside. Although it was once one of the poorest countries in Western Europe, the end of dictatorship and introduction of Democracy in 1974, as well as its incorporation into the European Union in 1986, has meant significantly increased prosperity. However it may be one of the best value destinations on the Continent. This is because the country offers outstanding landscape diversity, due to its North-South disposition along the western shore of the Iberian peninsula.

Portimão is the biggest town in the western Algarve and sits on the bank of the Arade river facing Ferragudo on the opposite bank. Portimão's atlantic beach of Praia da Rocha has, over the years, become a resort in it's own right with lots of hotels and apartments, restaurants and bars, discos and clubs and shops.
Portimão is a mix of late 19th, early 20th century buildings in the older part of the town, and high rise apartment blocks in various pastel shades of blue, pink and coral around it. The town centre is simply perfect for those who love to shop! It is jam packed full of shops, offering a wide choice of clothes, gifts, souvenirs, electrical goods and general household items. You’ll see brands you see at home, such as Mango for the ladies and plenty of traditional shops selling bargain leather goods, such as handbags and belts.

There are also plenty of bars, restaurants and café’s where you can sit for a bite to eat or a drink and watch the town carry on around you. To see the more relaxed side of Portimão, wander down to the river front, where the 'Manuel Bivar' gardens are, and have an ice-cream or a coffee at one of the cafe's along the front. You will also find Portimão's famous fish restaurants at the end of the waterfront near the bridge - just follow the aroma of sardines barbecuing!

We have booked 5 apartments (3 people per apartment), which have 2 single beds and 1 sofa bed (double bed) in each. There is also an outdoor swimming pool and bar with a billiard table outside the apartments.

Transfers from airport to apartments
More details and instructions will be provided once the group is confirmed and everyone books their flights.

We will be staying in self-catering apartments, so everyone can make their own breakfast and packed lunches with the food bought from a local supermarket (which turns out very cheap), and we can go out for dinners together to sample some of Portuguese delicious cuisine.

We will have surfing lessons on three days: Sat, Sun and Mon. The surfing instructors will pick us up from the apartments with their minibus and take us to their chosen beach, and then back to the apartments. There will be two surfing sessions each day – in the morning and in the afternoon with a lunch break in between. We would advise to make a packed lunch and bring with you to the beach.

Our yoga instructor Aneta will be coming with us, and has kindly offered to give us a yoga session each morning (Sat, Sun, Mon & Tue). Weather permitting, we aim to have the yoga sessions outside, basking in the sunshine. So please bring a large towel that you can use as your mat. The yoga sessions will take place before breakfast. Check out Aneta’s yoga website to give you an idea of what will be offered:

Thanks everyone for being such an amazing group. A special thanks to Hibak for her help and hard work, and to Aneta for leading such great yoga sessions each morning. I really got hooked on them! Tasted some delicious sea food, and of course got so much sea, sand and sun to last me for the rest of the summer! Thanks everyone.

I apologise about the ads that are stuck on to some of the key words. I tried removing them, but they seem to pop right back on! Just don't click on them.
