uDare - Snowdon 'Same Day'Challenge!
Sat 28th Sept 2013 (£55 incl transport)

***********************************

PLEASE NOTE: This WAS the 31st August trip that was cancelled due to illness of the organiser. The Sept 28th Date is provisional and not yet confirmed!

***********************************

(London to Snowdon and back in a day..all in good time for you to chill on Sunday! )

If you have not already hiked to the top of the highest point in England & Wales you need to get that one under your belt. If you have already done it, lets face it, its about time you had a really good hike anyway!

We're all busy though eh! ...so for this challenge we will be leaving London early Saturday morning, hiking Snowdon & arriving back home the same evening!!

We'll be meeting outside King Cross station at 6:15am on Saturday 28th September and aim to get back to London by around 11pm.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Payment includes return transport from Kings Cross Station to Snowdon & guided hike up Snowdon.

---------------------------------------------------------------

We've done this for the last 3 years & it worked out brilliantly. Everyone had a great time, felt happy to have climbed Snowdon that weekend & still had Sunday to relax fully & enjoy!

------------------------------------------

Click here to see the great photo's from 2010!

Click here to see the 2011 crew in action!

... and Click here to see the last one in 2012

-------------------------------------------

This trip caters for those for who acheiving/enjoying 'Snowdon' is the all important thing and would sacrifice a bit more time spent travelling and tiredness on that one day for smaller costs & having an extra full day at home on the weekend!

It is mainly straightforward hiking but there are a few sections where you will need to scramble a bit up stable rocks (more a case of having to put your hands down for balance rather than pulling yourself up). It's fine for most people but not really suitable for anyone who is unfit or suffers with strong vertigo.

* Our intended routes are to go up the Pyg trackdown the Miners track (though unlikely, these could be subject to change ;-))

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recommended to bring:

*Water (+Hot flask would be good if the weather is cold?)
*Waterproof/windproof jacket/trousers are essential (it is recommended that jeans are not worn as
in hot weather, they are  heavy and hot and hold sweat next to your skin. In wet weather, they soak up rain like a sponge. If you end up wet from either sweat or rain, you may soon be chafed on your thighs and crotch. Instead, choose walking trousers made from a sweat-wicking fabric).
*Appropriate clothing but at least a fleece as it is likely very cold near the summit!

*Hiking Boots are essential
* Manageable backpack for your things
*Money for food & drink (Great Cafe at the top of the mountain with hot/cold food/drinks - NO guarantee this will be open!)
*Bringing snacks and lunch is recommended as the cafe at the top is sometimes closed or too busy)
*A smile and general good vibe
A decision on somewhere to eat after the hike will be made upon arriving back at the transport, depending on the time!

    Super trip for one day

    September 29, 2013

  • Emma

Damnit. Weather forecast changed from sunny to rainy and I will be in trainers (takkies to any fellow South Africans). Oh well, dancing in the rain it is ;)

    September 27, 2013

    • Jon

Well Emma - no rain on the BBC forecast. Let's keep our fingers crossed it doesn't! ;-) Rain is another reason we don't recommend trainers/takkies. They are slippery on the rocks!

I would check amazon. Amazon prime delivers the next day: http://www.amazon.co....

      1 · September 24, 2013

    • Jon

when I'm not sure about what I'm buying I prefer to try on first and, given the closeness to Saturday, if you purchase on-line, you won't have much chance to exchange if you are not happy with the fit. I find the stores list at the end of this post reasonably priced, although with Go Outdoors you have to factor in the purchase of a discount card. The Go Outdoors site does have some useful buying tips under "Videos" and I would check out the one about layers and there are a several about hiking boots. http://www.decathlon.... http://www.gooutdoors...

I am looking for two tickets. If anyone changes their mind and has two tickets please let me know.

    September 24, 2013

  • Emma

Can this route be done in trainers? Or do I need to buy hiking boots? Looking forward to it!

    September 23, 2013

    • Wolf

Hi Emma, I have seen many people do this route in trainers without a problem. However you really have to watch where you step during a few sections and I have seen a few twisted ankles. So, for the ankle support we feel boots are really essential & trainers are not suitable...but many have done it so it's your choice! ;-)

      September 23, 2013

Oh my gosh, excited! I need to do something like this again :)

I am really sorry for letting you down for 31 August, my infection really knocked me for six! Just getting back into the swing of things now. I'm also very disappointed for those who cannot make on the new date but I hope that you will be able to make the one in October.

Hi Guys, we are pleased to confirm that the rescheduled date of September 28th for this Snowdon Challenge trip definitely IS on! :)
There will also be ANOTHER Snowdon Challenge on Sat Oct 19th

With the change of date, everyone on this event is entitled to a refund until Wednesday Sept 4th.
If you have already received a refund but DO still want to go on the Sept 28th or Oct 19th, please pay again through PayPal by Weds Sept 4th and/or email [masked] confirming you wish to keep your place, otherwise on the 5th your rsvp will be changed to 'No' so others can take your place.
Anyone who has not yet received a refund will now automatically be kept as a 'Yes' rsvp for 28th Sept.
If you would like a refund or to change your rsvp to Oct 19th, please advise us via email by Weds 4th. After that date you will have to sell your place on privately. We will also make the Oct 19th Snowdon Challenge 'live' and open to all on Thurs Sept 5th.

    • Ataur

Hi wolf can I pay next week? Can u save me a place or do I have to make payment to do that

      September 3, 2013

    • Wolf

Hi Ataur, we can't save places as we've tried that lots of times before and it just doesn't work out well. There probably will be some other people changing rsvp's later this week & we'll also be making the October 19th Snowdon date live then too ;-)

      September 3, 2013

  • Wolf

Our minibus for the new date of 28th Sept has 17 rather than 15 seats so i have just updated the event to reflect 2 extra now available... be quick ;-)

    Hi guys,

We have some bad news for the SNOWDON Challenge trip this coming weekend!
Jon has succumbed to a severe kidney infection that came on earlier this week. We've held of cancelling for the last couple of days hoping it would get better but it got worse.
At this late notice, with several other uDare organisers on other trips, unfortunately we will have to CANCEL this weekends Mt Snowdon trip :(

We will change the event on Meetup to 28th Sept for now but this is NOT CONFIRMED. We will work over the weekend on trying to confirm a September date for it. Due to the uncertainty of the replacement date at this point we will reverse all PayPal payments for this event.

This would have been the 9th time we have done this trip & come rain, sun, snow (we've had them all), it is always well worth it! Sorry for your inconvenience. Hope you all have a great weekend anyway & that Jon recovers well over that time ;-)

    Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the Mount Snowden challenge. I'm Jon your Event Host and taken this trip once before. This is the strongest uDare challenge that I have attended but the one that has given me the most satisfaction.

It is a long and physically challenging day and does require a reasonable level of fitness and the right equipment, so do make sure you read the event description above. That said it is a fantastic thing to say you have done and the feeling of achievement when you get to the top, not to mention the views (clouds permitting), is amazing!

I'm not only here to help you enjoy your day but answer any questions you may have beforehand. So don't be afraid to ask, however please note that I will not be able to guarantee to answer any questions between 25 June and 9 July. If you do have any then please post them and I will definitely answer you by the end of the 10 July.

I'm looking forward to meeting you on 31 August!
