Northern Lights Arctic Activity Adventure – Swedish Lapland - 12th-19th Jan 2013

  • January 12, 2013 · 8:00 AM

Because it was sooo bloody good.. we are repeating this fantastic Northern Lights Multi Activity Adventure in Swedish Lapland in 2013... AND have managed to hold the 2012 price!

As well as having an excellent chance of seeing the lights, we have a FULL programme of Snowmobiling, Husky dog sledding, visit to the famous spectacular Ice Hotel, Cross country skiing, Snow Shoeing, Ice Fishing and visits to a Moose sanctuary and Sami reindeer herder!

Not forgetting, great food (lovingly home cooked, often organic/locally sourced), a very high standard of Arctic clothing and equipment, very comfortable and warm accommodation including outside hot tub & sauna ALL included in the price of £1279 (see payment options below)!

Click this to check out photo's from the last trip

The aurora borealis (Northern Lights) is one of the world’s most breathtaking phenomenon and on most peoples ‘must do’ list at some point in their lifetime. The best time to see it in Lapland is Dec to Feb so we've picked a date for our adventure right in the middle of that ;-) 2012 has been a great year to see them as we witnessed on our trip but the Solar maximum (max period of Sunspot activity causing most Aurora effect on earth) is late with its approx 11 year cycle & is expected to happen around the end of 2012/beginning of 2013, when the best displays can be seen!!

We have arranged an amazing package where the activities are suitable for everyone – no previous experience or skills are needed – any training that is required will be provided as part of the activities.

This package costs £1279 and includes:
* All transfers to and from the Kittila airport (Finland) to the resort in Sweden
* All Accommodation
* All meals (3 per day) and non alcoholic drinks
* All activities
* All outer thermal clothing (Boots/trousers/coat/gloves/hat/balaclava)
* 7 nights accommodation (6 at the resort & 1 at Wilderness Cabin)
* Northern Lights wilderness night trek (they can also be seen clearly from resort)
* Snowmobiling, 2 people per machine (driving/passenger - can swap as required)
* Husky Adventure, 2 people per sledge (driving/passenger - can swap as required)
* Visit to and talk by Sami Reindeer herder
* Visit to a Moose Sanctuary
* Visit to the Ice Hotel
* Snow shoeing
* Ice fishing
** Flights are not included so you would need to book your own.

You can arrange slightly different flights/connections but you must ensure that you arrive in Kittila by 20.50 on Sat 12th Jan and have to be on a flight back no earlier than midday from Kiruna on Sat 19th Jan.

Out - Sat 12 Jan 2013
20:50 - Arrive in Kittila - Finland

Return - Sat 19 Jan 2013
12:45 - Depart from Kiruna, Sweden

The itinerary is:

Day 2 (Sun) Breakfast, Split into two groups where one will be going Cross country skiing in the morning, break for lunch then taking a Snowshoe trek in the afternoon with plenty of opportunities to take photo's in the forest and frozen lakes. Second group will do it the other way around. Evening meal then relax, socialise, enjoy Hot tub & Sauna at your leisure

* Each evening you can enjoy the hot tub and sauna, walk down to the frozen lake for a great view of the Northern Lights if they're out, take the Cross country skis out on the illuminated track, chill in your room or socialise in the lounge, free Wi-Fi available, play in the snow, as you choose! ;-)

Day 3 (Mon) Breakfast, Magical Husky Adventure into the true wild frozen winter wonderland, Lunch in wilderness cabin (with much appreciated open fire), Afternoon return to base on Huskies, Evening meal then relax, socialise, enjoy Hot tub & Sauna etc at your leisure

Day 4 (Tue) Breakfast, visit to the Moose sanctuary, where the lucky ones gain refuge from being hunted, Lunch (included as always) today will be taken at a local Pizzeria, Afternoon we'll visit the Ice Hotel with it's numerous sculptures, themed rooms, church and chance for you to choose your poison in the bar!, This evening we'll take a trip in the jeeps to the deep woodland for a different perspective on the Northern Lights!

Day 5 (Wed) Breakfast, cultural visit to Sami Reindeer Herder with informative talk & great chance to photograph the semi wild creatures, Lunch back at the ranch, Afternoon trying our hand at some ice fishing, cutting out holes and moving around as desired (first catch gets a beer/wine on the house! ;-)), Evening meal then Chill time.

Day 6 (Thus) Breakfast, Snowmobile briefing and getting issued with kit, Snowmobile safari out into the deep wild winter wonderland, Open fire lunch at a hut en-route, continue in the afternoon until arriving at our wilderness camp for tea/coffee/hot juice, warming by the open central fireplace, sauna and chill

Day 7 (Fri) Breakfast, Continuation of the Snowmobile safari taking a different route back to the ranch (also through beautiful forest and over frozen lakes etc), Late lunch back at the ranch, Free afternoon for sledging, cross country skiing etc in daylight or chill, socialise, go for a lake or forest walk etc as you like

Day 8 (Sat) Breakfast, Free time, Transfer back to Airport all dependant on flight time.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the harsh climate & wild environment the itinerary may be subject to change at any time

    1 week to go until the Jan NL trip, great start to the year this will be!

    * I spent a total of £30 last year. The only thing around to buy is beer/wine so maybe you'll spend around £50 on average. * Arctic coat/trousers/boots are supplied (used during activities and any time you need it outside of that too) * Recommend to bring a balaclava and thin gloves (to go under issued ones) (maybe hand warmers for time as passenger) on snowmobile as that is when it was coldest with wind chill - they have heated handlebars but can get cold when you are a passenger)

    * Camera tripod for best NL shots

    * (I didn't need it last time but) chap lip stick in case it's colder than before

    * Thermal underwear / Ear plugs / Eye shades / Swim suit & Towel for the Sauna & Jacuzzi

    - You should have emailed Saumya (Jan) or Sue (Feb) with your flight info by now. If not, please do & contact them direct if you have any further questions.

    Enjoy! It's awesome up there! :)

    Hi Guys,
    Not long now until your Northern Lights trip! What a great way to start 2013 that will be! :)
    Ok so as per the event page, the final payment date of end of November is rapidly approaching.
    There is a variety of payment situations ranging from some of you who have paid in full already, some making the 3 instalments & some who have not yet paid anything due to jumping on board late.
    However much you have left to pay, I will need to receive your final balance by 30th November please guys ;-)

    Hopefully everyone has booked their flights (as per your relevant event page) by now! If not, hurry!
    I’m in Australia at the moment so texting or calling me is no good but do feel free to email any questions & I’ll get back to you within 48hrs ;-)

    Hi all, Wolf sent me a message about the flights saying that they can be Kittila both ways or the same as Sue's Feb trip (Kittila out/Kiruna back) so I've just spent an age looking into it and have come up with the following info for everyone:

    The best priced flights are the same ones that are listed on the Feb trip page ( It is booked directly through the SAS website and the current price for those is £ 242.35.

    The into/out of Kittila option costs £ 132 for the outbound flight (same as above) and then £ 184 for a Finnair/BA combination return. Obviously this comes to £ 316 so it costs more anyway but also the connection windows are small so it would be better to be on a pure SAS ticket in case there's a delay and a connection is missed.

    Having said all of this, I'm personally planning to split all the flights and do city breaks both sides of the trip so please contact me directly if you are interested in that:-p

      Found a slightly cheaper option for me to get out there:
      Sat 12th Jan 08:00 EasyJet Gatwick>Copenhagen (£46.99)
      Sat 12th Jan 17:30 SAS Copenhagen>Kittila (£57.20)

      Couldn't find a cheaper alternative for the way back, so have booked the same flight as Vicky's mentioned above. The cost of this has now gone up to £[masked]

    I'm booked! I couldn't resist seeing the capitals (even if they won't be at their best) so I'm staying 2 nights at both Copenhagen on the way out and then 2 nights in Stockholm on the way back. Managed to get all the flights for about £230 but will also be paying for hotels, etc. I think I'm on the same two core flights as the group so no problem linking up with the trip. If anyone else is intested in seeing the cities too, my flights are:
    Thu 10th Jan 13:05 Easyjet Gatwick>Copenhagen (£46.99)
    Sat 12th Jan 17:30 SAS Copenhagen>Kittila (£ 57.40)
    Sat 19th Jan 12:45 SAS Kiruna>Stockholm (£ 79.30)
    Mon 21st Jan 19:50 SAS Stockholm>Heathrow (£[masked]

    Hi Vicky, I haven't booked yet but checked out the flights that are recommended for the February trip and the times are the same. The outbound flight is about £ 130. Wolf, can you confirm that we're flying into Kittila (Finland) and leving from Kiruna (Sweeden) or not???
