=============================

This nearly week long trip offers the opportunity to explore the dramatic volcanic landscapes of Sicily's Aeolian Islands and Mount Etna.

The seven islands that make up the archipelago are UNESCO World heritage sites and you can see why; black sand beaches, thermal springs and striking active volcanoes.
We'll trek on Vulcano and Stromboli and take in the culture and beauty of the area.

On Sicily mainland we trek on Mount Etna (3350m), the highest active volcano in Europe with its diverse landscape, lava flows and vast plains of black sand at the summit contrast with the green and fertile lower slopes.

This trip to Sicily offers relaxation and stimulation with a great mix of invigorating treks and interesting town visits. You'll gain a first hand appreciation of the power of volcanoes, enjoy contrasting scenery, the sweet taste of the “malvasia” wine, great food and the warmth of the local people. - all in a week!

Tiny, white-washed houses are perched like eagles nests on volcanic mountain slopes, whilst below the contrasting turquoise and blue waters of the Mediterranean lap black, sandy beaches that fringe the shoreline below. Barren lava flows meet a seemingly infinite succession of cultivated fields, whilst razor sharp mountain crests afford striking panoramas further enhancing the juxtaposition of constantly changing colour.

During the trip you’ll walk on active volcanoes, explore crater rims and recent lava flows whilst also discovering picturesque fishing villages steeped in tradition, ancient Roman ruins and enjoy thermal springs, mud bath, river & beach for swimming too.

Another fantastic bunch of people to see the sights of Sicily and in particular, the highlight of course, lots of large eruptions into the sunset & eventually night sky, as we trekked up the side of the Volcano! Cheers guys, good times! :)

Good fun and a good social group. A little too much site seeing but that was due to the Gorge being closed by bad weather.

Hi guys, having done the same trip this week, a couple of things that we learnt spring to mind..
    * Bring a small lunch box to keep any lunch/sandwiches from being squashed (if you've got room!)
For the day we are away on the outlying islands..
    * Don't take a change of clothes for that day. Just bring a backpack that can fit your warm/waterproof gear (it was night time and did get cold up there), minimal (1 night) wash gear, underwear.
    * Head torch is compulsory up the volcano but can be hired for 3 Euro's
    * The mud path was enjoyed but the sulphur smell lingers so a good soap & maybe wear something you don't mind throwing away after (not necessary but you may not want the smell hanging until you can wash the costume)!?!
*With a few v. early mornings, it was universally agreed to change the Friday so that we catch the 11:50 hydrofoil from Stromboli to Volcano island so as to catch the full breakfast in a chilled way on Stromboli, which still leaves good time to fit Volcano in!:)

Take a wp. jacket or poncho with you. I won't get bothered with trouser as here is still very good the temperature(over 20 C)

      October 13, 2012

    • Ivan M.

So we don't have to wear trousers? That's very liberated. Okay. I'll make sure to bring my best underwear. Guessing this means another trip to M&S! Viva Le Liberation!
