The Location:

Lake Balaton is located in western Hungary, halfway between Budapest and the Austrian border.

It’s water is velvety smooth and tepid, warming up quickly in summer to reach a temperature of 20-26 °C. It is rich in natural beauty spots, historic values and folklore traditions, making this long lake the holiday spot of choice for generations of Hungarians, Austrians and Germans alike.

Balaton is the biggest natural sweet-water lake in Europe with water surface of 600 square kms (232 square mile). The length of the shoreline is approximately 200 kms (125 miles).

The southern shore of the lake is known for its shallow water beaches and its spectacular panorama.

The northern shore has hills and the most beautiful region with its meadows, forests and ravines. The area is well known for its wines and therefore nice vineyards surround it.

Itinerary:

Our meeting point will be Budapest Airport – Arrivals on 9th of September (on Sunday) at 12:00 Mid day *Everyone needs to be here for this time for onward transport

Day 1 – ARRIVAL TO BUDAPEST – then the transfer minibus takes us to the north side of the Lake Balaton (approx. 1,5-2 hour) - accommodation on Tihany.

Tihany is a village on the northern shore of Lake Balaton on the Tihany Peninsula (Hungary, Veszprém County). The whole peninsula is a historical district.

The center of the district is the Benedictine Abbey, which was founded in 1055 AD by András (Andrew) I, who is buried in the crypt. The still functioning abbey is a popular tourist attraction due to its historical and artistic significance. It also has the best view of Lake Balaton. Tihany's inhabitants have the highest per capita income ,and the town has the highest housing prices in the whole of Hungary.

Check in to the Hotel and enjoy our afternoon. Program will be discussed later with plenty of options to explore the historic, architectural, and natural treasures of Tihany and the peninsula under the same name. (swim in the lake, relaxing on the beach, get on the bike and explore the village, go sailing, etc. ….)
In the evening we'll enjoy an open fire traditional dinner outside on the Hotel's private island.

Day 2 – START OUR BIKING TOUR FROM NORTH TO EAST SHORE - After breakfast and receiving of our bikes, we'll begin our cycling tour along the Balaton bicycle path in an easterly direction. Cycling along the northeast bay of the Lake. We will go through Balatonfüred, a city of imposing vacation villas built for Hungarian high society in the Belle Epoque era. Later, continuing east, The Holy Right Chapel with its gold mosaics is located in Balatonalmádi. During this stage you will pass by an impressive yellow soil wall.

Enjoying panoramic views all the way along the shore, we will arrive to Siófok early afternoon where we will check into the 3* Hotel that we'll be staying at for the night, before getting transported to a nearby vineyard for an evening of wine tasting

(Stage: around 33 miles / 55 km)

Day 3 – ALONG THE SOUTHERN SHORE OF THE HUNGARIAN SEA – After breakfast the tour continues clockwise around the lake. Cycling on the south lakeside towards Fonyód, we'll pass typical, picturesque Hungarian resort villages. This will be an ideal section spend some time swimming in Lake Balaton, make the most of the beautiful sunset panorama of Balaton & the wellness facilities at our Fonyód wellness hotel.

Chance for a sailing trip.

(Stage: around 27 miles / 43 km)

Day 4 – THE CAPITAL OF BALATON, ON THE WEST SHORE.

Biking to Keszthely, the town is notorious as a thermal bathing resort, which we'll make the most of. It is also a cultural center for the Lake & is the location of the wonderful Festetics Palace, where you can admire the historical collection of the baroque palace. Sightseeing in Keszthely. Afternoon trip to the Héviz Spa, and bathing in the Thermal Lake. Héviz is a world famous spa resort near Lake Balaton. The 36°C water is rushing up from 39 metres deep and has been long believed to banish all mannor of ills by locals.

Hotel Accommodation in Keszthely (Wellness Hotel). Jacuzzi, sauna wellness facilities freely available to us along with good value massage option.

(Stage: around 23 miles / 36 km)

Day 5 – ALONG THE NORTH-WEST SHORE – Early morning we start off riding along the northern lakeside, passing by some amazing dormant volcanoes, splendid panorama's and wonderful vineyards. Leaving the southern shore, we reach Szigliget (on the top of the 239 meter high Várhegy hill stand the ruins of the medieval fortress) and Badacsony, described as “the most beautiful landscape of Hungary. The lakeside slopes are covered mostly in grapevines.

Late afternoon we'll have an option to visit a viewing point or just relax in the town. We finish the day with a 3 courses dinner and a wine tasting (included in the price)!

Accommodation for the night in Badacsony will be in a small wine hotel.

(Stage: around 19 miles / 30 km)

Day 6 – THE REST OF THE NORTHERN SHORE – So commences our final day of cycling. From the interesting Badacsony hill, we'll continue towards The Káli basin. This time we move away a bit from the Lake. This place will surprise you with some marvellous geological formations and natural treasures. Tiny, peaceful villages and the fresh air make the Káli basin a very pleasant hiking & biking area. We'll stop for lunch at a local vineyard. Here we can enjoy the fabulous view to the lake and Kali basin and a wine tasting with great outdoor oven cooked traditional lunch.

After the break we roll down the hills to get back to the Balaton cycle path. The Tihany peninsula, with its rich in sights and attractions ahead of us. We say goodbye to our bikes to enjoy the last night in the area in Tihany itself.

Hotel Accommodation in Tihany with a fine farewell dinner to enjoy our good memories.

Great trip, thanks Istvan and Wolf, and all who joined in for making it a success. Hats of to Istvan in particular for managing constant requests for assistance in bridging the language barrier (especially with the brilliant translations during wine tasting!). Total respect to Lana and Fiona for getting back into the action after falling off and picking up injuries. "Puszi puszi" to all of you for being great company. Mon dieu.

Brilliant trip as always. A massive thanks to everyone who made it so much fun, great spending time with old friends and making new ones. Great weather (mostly), great cycling, great food and wine, but I think I'll remember the laughs the most! Biggest thanks goes to Istvan for his brilliant organisation and translation skills, and his tireless patience with so many demands. Legend! Roll on the next one! Whoop whoop! xxx

Only a few more days and getting very excited now:-)
For the people who are flying home on Wednesday from Vienna, I've spent ages long trying to find a good place to stay. Everywhere has both good & bad reviews and is either a very central hotel which is pricey or a hostel near the Westbahnhof (main station) so I've finally decided on the latter at least for the Monday (17th) night and booked a twin room with ensuite which I'll either stay in myself or share with someone if they want. It's called the 'Do Step Inn';-) hostel and info is on Hostelworld/bookers.com and here:
    http://www.dostepinn.com/index2.php?inhalt=home&lang=en.
They have all kinds of dorm and private rooms so have a look and make your own decsions! Hope that helps, see you all Sun:-D

    September 4, 2012

  • Olga S.

Booked 2beds in the room of 8 hehe,
I big appeal to the trip leaders, would it be possible for you to come up with some check list of a must have items for the trip such as you'd take for yourself and extras, it'd be very helpful, especially for those who packs half one hour before the cab arrives... :)

    September 3, 2012

I booked a night at Wombat as well.

    August 26, 2012

  • Chris

Ok sorry for being so behind on this!
I fly out from stansted on FR8353 at 8.40, arriving in Budapest T2 at 12.00.
I've booked wombats for Saturday night (15th) and fly back to stansted at 21.30 on Sunday, arriving 23.00.
    Looking forward to it!

Guys could we not book something there and then? Anyway, I'm easy, if you figure out the stays just email me too please, Im quiet busy now and don't always check the updates on here x

    August 16, 2012

  • Istvan

I wasn't really thinking about a particular hostel or hotel. I don't really know the hostels that much. Just heard a few things. The best to check the reviews on the hostelbookers. But if you're thinking to book a hotel do not hesitate to ask me about infos as I know them better and got more informations through a friend.

    August 16, 2012

  • Istvan

Hi guys. Yes I can recommend the Wombats Hostel. I heard just good things from them. Really good the location as well. If someone want a bit more expensive place to stay I can recommend the hotel Medosz. Perfect location, good breakfast, nice people. You can check it here: www.medoszhotel.hu

Hi Istvan, were you thinking of a particular hostel in Budapest or should we go for Jessica's suggestion?
Olga (and any others), someone told me about one in Vienna called Hostel Ruthensteiner that had a good vibe but she fell short of actually recommending it and it looks like it's had mixed reviews so I'm open to suggestions! We should probably get this stuff booked up soon.

    August 15, 2012

  • Jess

    Hi again,
I have had a look at hostels in Budapest and am considering booking this one for sat 15th:
    http://www.hostelbookers.com/property/prp/79961/arr/2012-09-15/ngt/1/ppl/1/
I don't know Budapest but it looks well located and has very good reviews. Any thoughts?

  • Jess

Hi everyone, I have booked my flights!
    - Sun 09/09 Wizzair flight from Luton, arrival in Budapest 11:45.
    - Return on Sun 16/09, departure from Budapest 12:20.
This means I will stay 1 night in Budapest to explore the city. Has anyone already found a cheap but secure hostel in a good central location? I will start looking in the next few days.
Looking forward to the trip and to meeting you all :-)
    Jess
