This is our highly popular monthly meeting where we discuss general topics of interest, welcome new members, socialize, give demos, and build community.

With the imminent release of Karmic Koala this month, we'll be featuring demos of new features and applications that are sure to be interesting, no matter what your knowledge level of Ubuntu. We will also have door prizes, food, beverages and other surprises for everyone.

** In the spirit of Ubuntu and diversity, please bring a guest or two to this meeting, ideally someone who normally wouldn't attend a "computer club" type of event (a friend, significant other, family member...) We promise to make it interesting for everyone who attends! Don't forget to add them to your RSVP if they're not already a meetup member **

A detailed agenda is posted on the official Ubuntu Vancouver wiki. Please check it out.

We are meeting on a Friday evening this month. Wow! More time for socializing.

Who attended?

  • 40 attendees
    •  Well attended, and everyone seemed interested in everything that was presented.
    •  The meeting was well run but short have a shorter social time in the beginning, with a longer break in the middle.
    •  This was the best meeting so far. Lot's of new Ubuntu knowledge shown and still learning.

Again, everyone's voice was heard-issues dealt with respectfully to the best of the support staff, and attendees listened. The presenters were clear and concise, as well as knowledgeable about their topic. Treats were tasty-door prizes great! Attendees clapped a lot-proof of contentment! Look forward to the next meeting!
    •  Loved all of the info about whats coming in the future releases.
    •  Lightning talk presenters shouldn't hesitate to limit questions to the end. It keeps the talks bite-size, and easier for the general audience to focus. Or they could stipulate that questions are welcome when something said is not understood, and that tangential questions could be saved for the end, if there's time.
    •  It is reaching the size limmits that feel personal

I was hoping for more interactive and social activities instead of watching so many presentations. The presenter complaining about Ubuntu and desktop Linux generally sounds like he would be better served by Windows. If he insists on using Linux but is unwilling to research compatible hardware and its software configuration, he should buy a PC with Ubuntu preinstalled and preconfigured with commercial and/or professional support from the PC vendor from instead of taking on a sysadmin's responsibilities and complaining because he just wants to be an end user. If he really needs crappy WLAN disconnectivity instead of a reliable LAN connection with wired Ethernet, he should buy an IEEE 802.11 → Ethernet bridge, which requires only working Ethernet on his PC (you could probably even indirectly connect a Commodore 64 with Ethernet to an IEEE 802.11 access point!), instead of playing with IEEE 802.11 drivers for Linux. There was a shortage of single girls for me, but what do I expect?

Ubuntu is growing in Vancouver, thanks to a supportive community. Great job everyone!

      Master Presenter
       Lots of good Karmic information
    • Larry Jacobsen (+1 guest)
This meeting did more to enthuse me about Ubuntu than all the other meetings I have attended, combined. The reasons were a couple of the presentations that for me, showed some of the possibilities for the new desktop that will be available in version 9.10. I was astounded (and of course impressed) by the possibilites that abound in this release. Despite the problems I have been running into, I will continue to muddle through.
    •  I really like the resident skeptic talk. Picking up those cds and flyers to distribute is great too. I've already passed one out. I plan on doing two talks, the other half is planning on joining the skeptic talks.
    •  I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the presentations and everything. Excellent to know that these are held here. Nice work, Randall and others!
