Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good, safe, unfortunately Ultimate-free morning.
RSVP for Sunday if you're interested in playing (Boxing Day Ultimate, sweet!). Looks like SPUN and Evanston will NOT be hosting?games, so this is pretty much our only shot at playing. However...
I have word on an indoor game Sunday evening from with the Evanston group at a cost of like $5/person?(I'm not sure if this is in addition to their regular 2 PM Sunday game, or if it's a replacement...in any case, as-of now there is not enough interest for there to be a 2 PM outdoor game), but from what I hear they "can't take on too many more people." Looks like it's only one field. Very unfortunately,?getting the right number of people seems to be a big issue common to indoor pick-up ultimate. It's an especially big issue when people don't RSVP to play. I'm not even sure how word about the indoor game on Sunday got out initially. Shoot me an email if you're interested in more details on this indoor thing on Sunday. I'll put you in contact with an organizer-type person who will know more than I do (as long as you RSVP for our Sunday game, first...if you RSVP "No" that's cool, but if you can take the time to send me an email asking about another game, you can probably take the time to RSVP for our game).
More info to come on potentially having indoor games at the MAX with Matt. My feelings are still very conflicted on the issue. Personally, I prefer playing outdoors. Personally, Busse is a shorter drive for me. However, we have a bunch of folks who prefer indoor. We have a bunch of folks who will ONLY play indoor during this weather. The drive is?shorter for SOME people. I think all those mostly wash out. My main concern, though, is turning people away. We had?25 last time, I think.?And that was a good number, to me. But?I really hate telling someone who wants to play frisbee that (s)he either 1) Can't play. or 2)?Has to sub in/out. (The main reason I dislike instituting "First 7 Stay" or "Last Back Sub"?during?pick-up games.)?So?again we're at limiting attendance, which?as I mentioned before is trickier when we don't have people RSVP. Next, there's an issue of cost. The?cost will likely be probably-negligible ($5 for a couple hours of frisbee is quite reasonable, in my opinion...if it's a shorter drive, you might save that in gas), but I really would hesitate to charge people and then have subs.?I've spent way too much time over the past couple weeks trying to figure out how to balance all of this, and I can't really come up with a good way to do it. There will likely be a poll of some sort sent out when I have time to figure out what the poll should be asking and how to interpret the responses. Asking the frisbee people what they want seems like the best option, since this group is for the frisbee people. If anyone has a brilliant suggestion, feel free to share it.
I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but the reason I've been trying to harp on RSVPs so much is for the benefit of everyone who has a longish drive out. I'd be out on the field regardless of RSVP numbers, but a bunch of people have 40+ minute drives. If there might not be a game, then it really sucks for them to make the drive and not be able to play.
Also, as many of you have noticed, "Maybes" are no longer "official" options for RSVPing. Since this was an optional feature (you could disable Maybes if you wanted) that they're now taking away, my personal beliefs (which do not in any way reflect those of the Suburban Ultimate Frisbee Meetup Group or its members) are that completely doing away with Maybes is fucking stupid. However, many of you have already figured out a relatively easy alternative --- RSVP "Yes," but mention in the comments part that you are a "Maybe." Please follow this policy going forward, and we'll continue to use Yes + 1/2*Maybe at ~10 PM the prior night to determine whether or not we'll have a game (with an email to cancel if we're < 8, going out by 7 AM the morning of the game).
I guess I should close with "Happy Holidays" to try and avoid offending anyone. I feel weird with that, though. Try to be less offended, and consider the idea that "it's the thought that counts."
Merry Christmas,
