I am pleased to inform you that tomorrow kicks off a new "off-daylight" weekly event. "Thursday Frisbee Group Dinner & Fun." What this means is every Thursday at 6:15, we'll all meet up for dinner at some pre-specified location (I'll have a draft schedule posted on Meetup sometime soonish - definitely subject to change -- if you have any places you really think we should go, let me know and I'll consider them when creating the schedule, no promises though). Once a monthish, we'll go do some fun activity instead of dinner (things like bowling, Gameworks, Laser Tag, glow-in-the-dark miniature golf, etc). Expect many more details in the near future.
I did an informal survey of people whose phone numbers I have, and got a ton of mixed answers. "Any day but Monday," "Monday would be good," "As early as possible," "7 sounds about right," etc. In order to accommodate the most people, Thursdays at 6:15 seems best. Makes sense, since everyone's schedule right now is already pretty set to be busy then.
I regret to inform you all that tomorrow is our last regularly-scheduled Weekday game of the season. To celebrate, we'll all be headed to Lou Malnati's in Elk Grove (1050 East Higgins Road Elk Grove Vlg, IL 60007). Keep going East down Higgins (right out of Busse) and it will be on the North side on the corner of Higgins & Joey.
If you're not playing but want to eat, we plan on arriving at 6:15, since frisbee will be over relatively early.
In other news, our weekend games are still going. We had 32+ people show last Saturday, and had a decent game of 8-on-8 (+spectators) in weird winds on Sunday. At the moment, these are planned to run all winter long.
Last year (our first year of winter games), we had been strongly encouraging people to RSVP (& we wound up cancelling a few games due to lack of RSVP interest).
What we're going to try this year is to assume "Game On" every day.
If we have people show, everything is fine. If at some point it's just me & Vince that show up and we don't have enough for a game, we'll revert to the "we need people to RSVP otherwise we'll cancel" method of operation.
I'll once again plug the Thanksgiving (Saturday) HAT Tourney in West Dundee. Registration closes this week, so go to that Google Docs spreadsheet (http://www.meetup.com/ultimatefrisbee-166/events/37913032/) and fill in your info. It'll be a really good time.
Pretty soon I'll be putting up the Thanksgiving games (Thursday at 10 AM, Friday at NOON).
You may be thinking "Hey Caz, what about lighted fields, or indoor games?" Well, the short answer is that I'm a slacker. The slightly longer answer is that a few people looked into a few options. Things with lights require money. Anything indoors requires even more money. Both of those require people to say they want to show up, and then actually show up, and pay. Seems like a bit more structure than our group as a whole would like. There are non-lighted places that we could play, but light (or, more accurately, "pretty good visibility") is pretty necessary to help avoid injuries.
However! There will be a couple of non-our-group options running this year. Indoor Thursday pick-up in Carol Stream starting in January for 10 weeks. Yes, it's Thursdays, but the games run from 8 - 10 PM, so you could definitely grab a quick bite to eat with us before playing. Additionally, I believe there are plans for Ultimate Chicago to run another iteration of Winter League. This was kinda neat last year (though the drive was a pain). Unsure of days / times / schedule / registration right now, but I'll fill you in when I know.
Our next party is tentatively scheduled for early December at KHod's new kickin' crib in Los Estates de Hoffman. I'll be following up with him shortly to finalize this. Then there will probably be one hosted by Tony or Shivi, or both. I need to talk with them both and confirm. At least one of those will be holiday-themed. We'll be encouraging folks to be their most "festive," whatever that means to them, and also try out a low-expense ( < $x, where x is small) gift-exchange sort of thing.
Our Halloween party was pretty awesome. Pictures from Shivi have been posted, and I think there are a number of others yet-to-be-uploaded. Quick piece of advice: even if you're going to be in-character as a zombie, stretch before playing...
That's about it for now. Thanks everyone for a pretty awesome season. Let's make next one even better.
See you on the (colder, unfortunately) field,
