The Razor's Edge by W. Somerset Maugham

  • Apr 2, 2013 · 7:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Larry Darrell is a young American in search of the absolute. The progress of his spiritual odyssey involves him with some of Maugham's most brilliant characters - his fiancée Isabel whose choice between love and wealth have lifelong repercussions, and Elliott Templeton, her uncle, a classic expatriate American snob. Maugham himself wanders in and out of the story, to observe his characters struggling with their fates.

The real meaning of enlightenment is to gaze with undimmed eyes on all darkness.

I loved reading the book and discussing its ramifications. The road to enlightenment is difficult, and not for the faint of heart.

I'm loving the book, just haven't read enough to attend tomorrow. Wanted to share with you the tale of the librarian asst (I sure hope he wasn't a librarian) who put this book on hold for me. And what did he reserve? A novel, with the same name, by Shannon Butcher. He had never heard of Maugham, and apparently, despite a co-worker of his mentioning that it was "Classic Fiction", seemed to think that this book would do.

From a review....Action packed, fast paced, intense and sexy. Wrap it all up with a tough heroine not afraid to face danger and a hot hero with a heart of solid gold, and we have one entertaining read.

Luckily, I went home and checked online, to see what he had reserved, so I didn't waste a week waiting for the wrong book.
