"Anna Karenina" by Leo Tolstoy (Pevear and Volokhonsky translation)

"Anna Karenina" tells of the doomed love affair between the sensuous and rebellious Anna and the dashing officer, Count Vronsky. Tragedy unfolds as Anna rejects her passionless marriage and must endure the hypocrisies of society. While previous versions have softened the robust, and sometimes shocking, quality of Tolstoy's writing, Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have produced a translation true to his powerful voice. This award-winning team's authoritative edition also includes an illuminating introduction and explanatory notes.

Someone said the book was cinematic - I think that's right. Tolstoy can show us wide sweeping panoramas or zoom in for breathtaking closeups. Lovely translation - wonderful deep and emotional discussion.

Probably the best book I have ever read. What a masterful writer Tolstoy is! The characters and their milieu were fascinating and I was engaged by everything - characters, political and sociological issues. This book was also an example of how to write powerfully and vividly. His power of description was so vivid and masterful.

Thanks, Mine. I also used the novel as an instructive device to develop my writing. I awed by each description.

Hi--Anna Karenina is the only book I've read through twice, and I'd love to discuss it with likeminded people. I hope you accept me into the group--I've got some instigatory opinions about Anna.. Have a great day! Stephanie
