Walking Tour of Sacred Spaces in Portland's NW Neighborhood

  • Dec 1, 2013 · 2:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

In the late 19th century Northwest Portland was the most prestigious neighborhood in the city. Today, numerous well-preserved historic residences and apartment buildings contribute to the distinctive character of the community. Situated in close proximity in this high-density area are several worship spaces built during the Portland boom years of 1890 to 1930. Each of these buildings displays a distinctive period revival style from that era.

We’ll view four of these sacred spaces and learn about the history and architecture of each: Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, St Mary’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, the former First Christian Science Church and Beth-Israel Synagogue. On this tour we will also view the interiors of Trinity and St Mary's cathedrals.

The tour covers about six city blocks and lasts about 2 hours. Easy walk.

All events being promptly at time indicated in posting.

Parking is available in the Trinity Episcopal parking lot and that is where the tour will start.

Cost: $10.

A bit of dampness did not deter us from exploring several significant worship places in NW Portland.

Hi folks, Much of this tour is indoors and will give us refuge from the predicted wet skies. Do bring an umbrella for the short walk between buildings and be prepared to be wowed by the interior of two splendid church interiors. We'll manage at least an exterior view of the other two "sacred spaces". See you on Sunday!

Hello, I just wanted to let you know about a few details for the tour this coming Sunday, December 1. Parking is available in the neighborhood and in the parking lot of Trinity Cathedral. The tour will start at the parking lot directly east of Trinity Cathedral. On this tour we will have a chance to view the interiors of both Trinity and St Mary's. See you Sunday!
