10:00 a.m. Sunday School Gang ? Naren Jackson continues
a series of discussions based on Paul Tillich by John P. Newport,
which has given us a great deal of insight into Tillich?s philosophical
approach. This coming Sunday, we will be reading from the book,
The Essential Tillich by F. Forrester Church
(Senior Minister of All Souls Unitarian Church in New York City),
for contrasts, in Tillich?s definitions of the frontiers of existence.

Tillich, who identified himself as an existentialist, remained a
Lutheran minister and would be categorized as being among
the ?Christian existentialists (along with Soren Kierkegaard,
who has been identified as the original ?Christian? existentialist).
In his encounter with ?mass deaths?, as a medic during the First
World War, Tillich came to realize the ?non-being? of death. This
?death angst? was the ultimate ?trigger?, which motivated him
to proclaim himself an existentialist.*
