Rabun Bald

Distance: Thru Hike 7.2 Miles (Peregrinate: To travel about or journey on foot)
Difficulty: Strenuous & Arduous
Hike Time: 4 - 5 hours
Elevation +/-: 1446' or 450m Some report Elevation change at 2340' 780m
Insects Hopefully none on the observation deck

We will Trek in from the upper entrance this time and do the easy (easy as in not as hard as the other one) ascent, as I now know which trailhead it isn't, and then come out using the steep trail.

From the Observation platform on the summit you can see GA, SC & NC in a 360 degree panoramic view. The views are supposed to be spectacular. The first 3 miles are roughly a 200' increase (66m) with the last 1.2 miles ascending 1200'

The top of Rabun Bald offers that rare view of wildness — no houses, roads, cellular towers or smokestacks. On a clear day, looking northeast, you can see for 100 miles across the Blue Ridge Escarpment, where Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina meet. There lie some of the last large uninterrupted forests in the Southeast.

Layers of ridgelines on the horizon, dark to lighter purple, appear endless. From the observation platform atop the 4,696-foot summit of our two-mile climb, the clouds move in horizontal puffs of gray and white, inviting us to reach out and touch. Rabun Bald, in the northeast corner of the state, is Georgia's second-highest peak, topped only by Brasstown Bald.

This is a part of the Bartram trail which I am attempting to hike the whole trail, over the next year with these day hikes.

IF THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT RISK OF A THUNDERSTORM THIS HIKE WILL BE POSTPONED, THE STORMS ON THE TOP OF RABUN BALD ARE WARNED AS VERY DANGEROUS.

Seneca 9.00 gas expense at .08/mile (Hopefully this is at least a dollar more than it is)
Greenville 12.00 (also hopefully higher than actual)

We hope to leave the Walmart parking area at 9:00 am so that we can be hiking by 10:30
allowing us to be out of the woods before 5:30 pm.

Hike will be at Bill, Janice & Mike speeds, as I wheeze my way up the Mountain. I am the slowest of the bunch.

This should be very enjoyable hike, but no walk in the park as it is 1200' higher than Sassafras Mountain. You will ascend almost 1500' and descend 2300'

ALWAYS BRING WATER AND SOMETHING TO EAT.

Manchurian BBQ in Clayton, GA If I remember correctly was 12.95/person bring a 20.00 and you will be fine and have change left over.

Everyone meet in Walmart parking area behind Zaxby's 1636 Sandifer Blvd
Seneca, SC 29678 We'll leave at 9:00 am.

Greenville/Easley carpool site to be determined

No Dogs are allowed on our Hikes !

"...According to Native American legend, Rabun Bald is inhabited by fire-breathing demon people..." (http://en.wikipedia.org) -- Glad I didn't know that before we went!

    •  The fall colors were awesome!
    •  A great day had by all. The colors were great and the company as well.
    •  Great walk, perfect temperature, well planned and except for my motion sickness, this would be a perfect time. Thanks to everyone for the help doctoring me. I do appreciate it. Good distance for the height ascended.
    •  Great day as usual! Thanks Bill!
    • CC
       Fun day of warm friendship!
    •  The Bartram trail approach is a much better hike and using Three Forks to descend made it a great thru hike. The number of bugs was much reduced at the summit. Able to look down into Sky Valley and away south to Currahee Mountain. It was actually a Mongolian BBQ, and was a great end to great hike. Welcome to our new members and hope you will join us again for more hiking.
    •  Lovely colors. Perfect temperature and plenty of collegial company. We were joined by two lively new hikers. Welcome to UHOA Kellie and Genie.
