Kayaking all day, please bring snacks, lunch, plenty of water and dress for the water and weather, and oh yea bring your kayak please.

we will put in at walker point on the Tugaloo river paddle to a water fall and then into Lake Hartwell and go to the take out at the county park on 123 which is the Georgia/SC border for a potluck picnic.

paddle will be about 6-8 miles or so.

Thanks Janice, Bill and Marianna for showing us this part of Lake Hartwell - especially the awesome waterfall! A great day - fun was had by all.

Very pleasant with the exception of the last couple of miles where we had to paddle hard to keep from going backwards when the wind came up.

Remember you need to have a PFD and a Whistle with you on the Lake. If you don't have either of them, I would suggest Academy or Walmart. If you need to borrow either one of those send me an email through Meetup.

There is a place in westminster that used to rent them not sure if they open early enough or if they are even for use on lake or chattooga. The number for the westminster place is[masked] they rent them in long creek, but again i think they are all whitewater boats.

This would be a first outing for my husband and me. Since we are taking out our kayaks at the park near the GA state line, how do we get back to our vehicles at Walker Point?

    August 9, 2013

    • Marianna

Depending on our final number, we will put at least one vehicle down at the state park where we take out. The driver of that car will shuttle other drivers back to the put in to pick up their cars and drive down to the takeout to load boats. The put in and take outs are about a 10-15 minute drive apart.

Glad to leave my Jeep where we take out - I can carry 4 passengers at a time back to their cars

Will there be anywhere near to rent a kayak, or should I try to come with one rented from somewhere close to me?

    August 13, 2013

    • janice k.

please rent one before coming as there are none around. Sundrift in Travelers Rest, half moon in Greenville or Brady's in Anderson.

Do you have the coordinates for Walker Point? I would love to do this trip, but not sure we can do it on a thursday.

Walker Point is off Praether Bridge Road in Toccoa heading up toward Yonah Dam. Longnose Falls is very hard to find unless you have been there before. With all the new alder growth along the shore, it may be a challenge for us to find the entrance as well. Hope you can make it on Thursday.

My kayak is for flat water/lake - I bought it for stability so it's not the fastest - are you going over the waterfall? What type kayak is needed for this day?

    August 5, 2013

    • janice k.

Hi welcome and it is flat water paddle so your kayak is perfect.

We are paddling to the base of the falls, from Lake Hartwell. The most adventurous rapids at this end of the lake are only class 1, and with the lake so high, they are covered over. We have two fishing kayaks we are using on this trip.

I was looking for 'beginner' kayak instruction and was wondering if it would be offered here.

    July 17, 2013

    • janice k.

Hi we do not do kayaking instructions, once in awhile we do a safety class. Sorry. If you are interested I would stop by or call Sundrift outfitters in Travelers rest and see if they know of any classes.
