Great Adventure # 5 Taconic Trl, America's Worst Trail, World's Worst Weather

This will be the 5th Great Adventure. It will be the most daring one yet. The Oldest of the Long Distance Hiking Trails in the Country is our Target. That is correct Vermont's Long Trail. 7 Days of hiking. 2 day drive each way. Camping along the way. Plan for this one.

Here are current plans:

1) Taconic Trail  36 miles overnight from Petersburgh, NY to Williamstown, MA

2) Long Trail & maybe the AT part of Long Trail

3) A mmonoosuc Ravine Trail and possibly the Jewell Trail near Berlin, NH

Taconic Trail is near where I used to live and the raw beauty of the mountains is breathtaking, plus we will be there during the fall foliage season.  In climbing the tallest peak in the Presidential range we can expect to possibly see some of the worlds' worst weather.

The Long Trail is where America's modern day long distance hiking trails all started. It travels up the backbone of Vt along the Green Mountain Ridge.

The Taconic trail, Long trail/AT were all new and so different from our Carolina trails. We hiked among plenty of rocks and boulders. The mountains glowed with brilliant fall colors. Enjoyed the adventure.

There may or may not be a 10.00/night charge/site/2 tents the one night we spend in the Xxxxxxxxx state park. Depends on whether or not the rangers come to the camp ground, not walking 2.5 miles extra to issue check

Some Info for the new people:
    1) You must have done either a backpack or kayak overnight with us prior to doing a great adventure.

    2) While we don't charge for this event, please be aware that this trip invovles a 2500 mile round trip, currently that is about[masked] per vehicle for gas. If we take 2 vehicles it will be[masked] divided by the number of people on the trip. (source mapquest based on sc gas prices)

    3) We do stop to eat on the way up as well as camp. Planned stops currently include "Madison's Brew Pub in Bennington and the Long trail brewery in Bridgewater.

    4) The weather is changeable at this time of year, maybe snow on the higher elevations, you generally will have a choice to pitch a tent or use a shelter, but be prepared for colder weather or hotter. You will be able to leave supplies and unneeded gear in one of the vehicles.

    5) Some members plan their annual vacation around this event, it will go on, possibly a similar trail if events dictate.

Weather.com for the 10 days from Sept 26, 2012 show temps from 34 - 72 with only one day of rain chance greater than 30%. There is no indication these temps will repeat next year, just somethingt to give you an idea of the temps in central Vermont at this time of year.
mt washington is forecast from 24 - 49 daily
and the massachusetts part is forecast to be 37 - 72

That special kind of trek that satisfies your body, mind, and spirit, the 35-mile Taconic Crest Trail delivers in the way only a long-distance trail can: Challenging uphill slopes end in long, easy downhill lopes, punctuated by soul-soothing views of endless green hills. Best of all, this 3.2-mile (one way) trail segment has a destination?a compelling crevasse that descends well into the mountain itself, with constant, year-round snow covering its floor.

The First Great Adventure Hike had a requirement that you must have hiked/biked/kayaked with us before. We have now changed that to you must have done at least one single day activity with us, and at least one weekend or multi day event. This will help everyone get to know each other and be better able to make informed decisions as to the type of events these are. On the Great Adventure's we may go the better part of a week seeing no one out side the group.
