backpack Congaree Swamp

  • Jan 25, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • congaree National Park

we will be hiking a loop of some kind in the swamp.  The route we will take will depend on the weather and if the park is flooded or not.  Some of the trail may be backcountry with the GPS.  will have two routes in mind and a backup plan if Congaree is flooded.

length: 10 miles each day

elevation gain:  maybe 200 feet :)

This was a good hike. It was different than what I'm use to, but in a good way. Congaree is a unique and interesting place. I liked it.

Thanks to our pathfinder Janice and bridge crossing experts Jeff and Trevor. A winter hike in high water swamp is different from foothills and quite interesting change in pace.

Was quite an interesting hike this weekend at Congaree. I love the swamp in all of its changes and I have never been there when it still has been flooded so was very exciting for me. Thanks to all who came and helped with directions, log finding and finding trail markers. Had a great time.

Packing up and I discover I can't find my MSR fuel bottle for whisperlite stove. Pretty sure they don't have those at Walmart. Anyone mind if I use their stove to boil water for dinner and for morning coffee?

Janice, I saw your update note. I will meet y'all at WalMart. Ready for lows in the upper 20's. Glad to know water is available. Check - no campfires. Willing to pick up trail trash. Looking forward to it.

We are backcountry camping so no fire?

    January 23, 2014

    • janice k.

that is correct, we can go on an owl hike instead of sitting around the fire.

Thankfully I'll still be able to go on this trip as planned. The stitches were removed today, my foot in healing nicely and the doctor cleared me to start hiking again. Looking forward to finally using my new Pocket Rocket and backpacking for the first time in almost two months!

Ok, I also have another folding type and a folding saw. I'll bring all three.

      January 15, 2014

    • Richard A.

I will bring the items. The blades are only about 10-12 inches and they weigh about a pound each. Small boat anchors. LOL

just talked to Sean and the water is going down but the trails will be muddy and he will update me on the water levels next week about mid week. I suggest you have a dry pair of clothes and shoes in your vehicle for when we get off the trail. The bad news is the visitor center is closed on Sunday and I need to find out if that means the bathrooms are closed also. The bathrooms at the after hours parking lot will be open such as they are. We will be registering as two separate groups for paperwork but hiking as one. MAKE SURE YOU BRING WATER SHOES AND EXTRA SOCKS. We have also been asked to mark on our GPS any deer stands found where we are hiking and to report any trails conditions that we find.

Sounds like an excellent hammock camping opportunity. Hanging above the swamp! Actually, I've never been to Congaree and I am looking forward to this new adventure. I will meet at Simpsonville and I'm happy to drive.

But wet feet at 35 degrees doesn't sound good.

    January 15, 2014

    • janice k.

no promises about having dry feet. bring a couple pair of socks.

I hope it is not too flooded! My 'water shoes' are my old sneakers I use when I kayak, so if it is cold I will be cranky! Janice I trust you to find high ground for our campsite.
