Backpacking in the Smokies

  • May 3, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • Smokemont Campgrounds

We have the shelter  so it is a go, you must pay your monies asap and that will guaranteed you slot.  If you are not camping at Smokemont on Friday night, we are meeting to start the hike at Newfoundland Gap parking lot at 0830. I hope to have already shuttle the cars by then.

paid members will have first choice if there is a waiting list.

Mt. LeConte (via Boulevard Trail) 8 strenuous miles of up and down.

Total elevation gain 3000 ft. But well worth it. We will be camping in the Shelter and hoping to catch the sunset on Cliff Top and the sunrise for those who want to at Myrtle point.

This is the smoky mts so can only have 8 people and cannot make the RSVP until one month before.  So if we cannot get the shelter we will still do a backpack trip leaving from Smokemont somewhere.  for those who want to car camp and hike for the weekend you are more than welcome.

Drive to Smokemont camp grounds in the Smokies for Friday day and night.

Saturday leave the campgrounds 0730 yes AM and shuttle cars and start hike. by 0830 at the latest. Smokemont does not take RSVP this early in the season so will be first come first serve on the campsites.

Sunday we will come back 5.5 miles on the Alum Cave Trail.

was a great adventure for me and enjoyed it all. Would have been nice to see some of the views but with the rain we saw some awesome water falls that would not have been there. great trip with some wonderful friends. will be back sometime.

I'll be either showing up really late Friday night or at the trail head Saturday morning.
