West Virginia's North Bend Rail Trail 13 tunnels 36 bridges

  • Jun 27, 2013 · 7:00 AM

It will be a long drive there, we will be camping the first night in  Monongahela National Forest.

We are switching the primary ride to the North Bend Rail Trail as some of the other trails have some conditions which make through rides next to impossible.

The North Bend will be a very good ride, and we may have another trail or two added to the mix, as we verify conditions.

If your hoped for ride isn't on this, don't worry as we will be going back next year too.

we have found that even us old folks can easily do 35-50 miles per day.

the ride will be set up to ride downhill, and the trails will be ridden mostly downhill.

We will be camping out on this trip, hopefully in state or national forest.

It would also be possible for some to meet us at the trailhead friday morning should they decide to drive up thursday night.

I walked my bike through mud, long grass and loose stones in many places after taking a long scary muddy slide near the starting point. The tunnels were very dark inside, but massive, historic and provided an interesting experience. Hopefully, in time this trail will be properly surfaced. Saw one local rider and two other out of town bikers with camping bags. This area of WV is so scenic with its hills, meadows, rivers etc. Had great camping experience and the best of friends to enjoy the adventure.

This was the toughest bike ride we have done, or at least what we completed. 43 miles through, mud, tall grass, loose gravel, spectres floating in the tunnel mists, and more deer than you can believe. Fearless leader all busted up, two others sore as hell, bionic leprechaun chugging along.

West Virginia, has a really great state park in the North Bend SP. Deer grazing by the tent, Beaver crossing the road, Turkey, Geese & Bats.

We will be returning and redoing this bike ride.
