RandoBrewing: Ride to Coronado Brewing Company

RandoBrewing (n.) a long-ish ride to a craft beer destination.

We'll start from Mission Bay and ride to Coronado Brewing Company via the Bayshore bikeway. Ride at whatever pace you're comfortable with. Take the ferry home if you like. Please be self-sufficient, though--know how to change a flat (REI has free lessons on basic bike maintenance), and be able to ride safely on city streets!

This is an idea I've been kicking around for a while. If this is successful, I'd love to make it a monthly ride. I'll supply cue sheets.

Thanks to everyone who came! Please leave honest feedback--I'm happy to have suggestions for improvements.

Hopefully we can get out again next month. Maybe Pizza Port Solana Beach--shorter but with some hills. What's your idea?

Yeah--that's what I had in mind for the ride north, since it's a very gradual hill to warm up on. Here's approximately what my original idea was: http://ridewithgps.co...

Yeah, that'll work. For whatever reason I didn't even think of going further up the coast first... Agreed going up Gilman is probably a nicer way to start. I always seem to get lost trying to cut through UCSD though :)

That was fun! For the curious here's my Strava track: http://app.strava.com/activities/40357743
The ride itself is approximately miles 6.3 to 40.4. Apologies for the hasty exit with Erin and hopefully I don't owe anybody any money - made a quick sprint to the 2:30 ferry and caught it in time!

Definitely want to do this again. I wouldn't mind a bit faster pace at the beginning (and a couple of fewer mechanicals) but this is the kind of riding I like - no need for team lycra, pacelines or 7am start, but still a decent workout. Solana Beach might be a little close but maybe loop through La Jolla on the way out? Getting most of the miles in before lunch and beer is probably the way to go. More throughts on the forums later.

Do you want to do a ride this Sunday. Start at say noon?

      February 12, 2013

    • Petteri K.

Yeah, I'm game and Sunday should work. You should have email if this Meetup thing works...

Hey all. Sounds like you had fun. Sorry I was not able to make it.

If you ride fast you'll probably catch the group. They're traveling at a very leisurely pace. I dropped out due to multiple flats. I think I have tire issues.

  • Rick

Thanks Gary, I'll meet you guys there!

    February 9, 2013

Rick- the group is ahead of you! I didn't see you as we crossed harbor and Nimitz.

    February 9, 2013

  • Rick

Still waiting here at Harbor and Nimitz, can anyone say where the group is now?

    February 9, 2013

  • Rick

I plan to meet up with the group at Harbor and Nimitz. Soulf be there by 10:00.

Hope you guys have fun. I've been on the midnight train all week! :(

John, should people view this as a group ride or a mini-brevet? In other words, riding in a group with somebody leading, regrouping etc, or people riding at different paces (with ad-hoc groups) navigating for themselves?

    February 6, 2013

    • Scott

Hope not. If I wanted to ride alone I'd ride alone.

Mini-brevet doesn't mean riding alone--as Petteri said, there will probably be ad-hoc groups (or maybe just one, big ad-hoc group). I just don't plan to have any designated leaders, sweepers, or points along the way where everyone will stop and group up again.

Oh, and beware: I believe Mission Bay Drive is closed 6-9am from the Hilton to Sea World Drive or thereabouts. It should be open for the 9am start but may make it tricky for us riding from the south to get to the start.

Besides being a good trek, are there other 'warnings' for a newbie - massive hills, hurricane force onshore winds, etc? Thanks!

    February 5, 2013

    • Scott

And that climb onto the mesa is just for those of us who live up here.

There's one solid hill--going over Point Loma. If you prefer, you could shortcut via Nimitz, but it's got some hairy sections traffic-wise. Otherwise it's flat.

I'll admit I've not ridden the entire route myself, so there could be more surprises I'm not aware of.

North on the Strand can be a little windy but that's why God made low gears. Grind it out, there is a sweet reward wating for you in Coronado.

Glad to have you! For some of us, the beer is at the half-way line--I'll be riding back the long way. Taking the ferry will cut about 20 miles off the return.

      - definately doing the ferry back to downtown. I usually hit Monkey Paw before the climb up Pershing!

      February 5, 2013

  • Morgan

Hey Jeremy, good idea. It's a great ride, I usually take the ferry back. FYI, the ride up the strand can be a grind, plenty of places to stop for a rest though. If the boss says I can play, I'll see you there.

Sounds like a great ride! I hope I don't get hit with OT that weekend.
