Urban on a Budget: All Members Can Suggest Events

Hi cool people,

I just want to let you know I made a change to our settings. I haven't been proposing or hosting events for a while now, and I'm truly sorry about that. Work, health, and other issues have been getting in my way. At the same time, I realize that some of you have suggested events that haven't been announced to the group. I was used to the "Ideas" system Meetup had before their big overhaul and didn't have a good grasp of how the new one works, but now it seems pretty clear to me that opening this up to all members is the way to go. As organizer, Meetup gives me the options of having suggested events announced to the whole group whenever someone suggests one, or when an organizer or 3 members RSVP to attend. For now, I've chosen the former: you can suggest an event, and it will get announced to the whole group (nearly 3000 members). If this creates too much email, gets abused, or causes other problems (I'm wary of multi-group events and efforts to promote for-profit businesses); I'll switch to the more limited option. I hope this restores some activity to our group and creates a more organic way of setting up events and finding activities people want to do.

I'm also curious to hear any ideas, suggestions, constructive criticisms, comments, or questions you have about Urban on a Budget. Are there certain kinds of events you'd like to see, especially that other groups aren't doing? Would you want more emails from me about freebies in the area, or fewer? Have you had problems or frustrations with the group that aren't resolved? Let me know.

Finally, I want to point out that Meetup charges me $12/month to keep the group going. I'll never require dues for Urban on a Budget, because that would defeat the purpose. But to the extent you are able, and especially if you've enjoyed the group and gotten something out of it, I encourage you to make a small donation to help offset our costs. You should be able to give by Paypal or Amazon at http://meetup.com/urbanonabudget. Thanks.

My best to each of you.
Jon
