These Monday night hikes are for people of all different hiking levels to get together and enjoy each other’s company. This week we will be hiking Mill Fork D to Dog Lake. This will be approximately 4.2 miles round trip to Dog Lake with an elevation gain of 1400’. The trail will start out with a small climb and will parallel the road for a while, eventually the trail will begin to follow a stream away from the road until we reach a junction at 1.5 miles. Going left the trail will begin
to climb steeply for .6 miles to Dog Lake.
Please consider bringing a headlamp or flashlight as we may be coming back in the dark.
Directions to Meetup: We will meet at the park and ride located at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon @ 7200 S and Wasatch Blvd and car to the trailhead. To get there from anywhere in the Salt Lake Valley, take I-215 until you reach the 6200 South Exit. Drive east on 6200 S. and the road will turn into Wasatch Boulevard. Continue on Wasatch Boulevard south until you come to the intersection with Fort Union Boulevard (7200 South). There is a 7-Eleven on the South-West corner of the intersection. Turn left at the intersection towards Big Cottonwood Canyon. The park and ride will immediately be on the left.
Directions to trailhead: Follow Big Cottonwood Canyon Road east up the canyon for about 9 miles to Jordan Pines and the signed Mill D Trailhead on your left.
DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED: Salt Lake City Watershed
Restrictions apply and are strictly enforced.
Moose: Be cautious in this area. Do not approach any moose you encounter on or near trails. Moose may seem calm and tame, but they are not! Moose are wild and unpredictable.
Please review the moose safety tips on the below link.
Be prepared: for the hike, the below link is a good resource for beginners to review before hiking.
After the hike: There will be the option of heading down to the Canyon Inn to socialize by the fire. The Canyon Inn is a bar but there is great pizza and everyone is welcome! The Canyon Inn is located at 3700 Fort Union Blvd.
