Hello all,
Hard to believe, but fall is here! For our October meetup, we'll be reading Lean Analytics by Alistair Croll and Ben Yoskovitz. You can get the book for up to 50% off via our O'Reilly perk, but we're giving away a free copy to one lucky member! To enter, simply post a tweet about the event (including the hashtag #uxcu) OR post a comment on the event page by this Wednesday, Sept. 25th. We'll ship the book to you so you'll have enough time to dive in before the event.
And now, a word from our friends at Disability Resources & Educational Services (DRES) at Illinois:

Dear Developer,
We cordially invite you to join The Accessible Community, a series of 3 no-cost workshops being offered to the Champaign-Urbana community in October to support web developers in making their sites accessible.
Why is digital accessibility important? The Internet and related technologies have enabled widespread access to a wealth of services and information that was previously unattainable. Unfortunately, these services are often not fully accessible to everyone, particularly users with visual, hearing, cognitive, and physical disabilities. We believe that the essential issue is that web developers and designers are unaware of digital accessibility concerns, not that they are unsympathetic to users with disabilities.
The University of Illinois has long been an international leader in accessibility. The campus actively develops Web Best Practices and tools to assist web developers in creating accessible sites. We also work with many large vendors including Blackboard, Moodle, Ebsco, and Microsoft to help them understand and achieve Universal Accessibility for their products. Despite the University’s vast knowledge and expertise, there is still a great need to raise awareness of accessibility and usability issues in our community and beyond.
The Accessible Community Workshop Series has been designed to help local entities understand accessibility problems and demonstrate methods to make web sites/applications universally accessible without jeopardizing style or interactivity. This free workshop series for local developers and managers will take place on the following dates:

  • Session 1 (Tuesday, October 8, 8-10 AM) – Intro to accessibility & demonstration of common pitfalls
  • Session 2 (Tuesday, October 15, 8-10 AM) – In-depth exploration covering basic accessibility elements
  • Session 3 (Tuesday, October 22, 8-10 AM) – In-depth exploration covering advanced accessibility elements

This Champaign-Urbana workshop series is intended for managers and website developers, as well as consultants and interested individuals. We will be offering Public Engagement IT Accessibility Certificates for successful completion of the series. Participants will also have access to the workshop leaders’ expertise after the series has completed, to help implement the skills learned during the workshops.
