Presentation #1: Kyle Mitchell, Senior Information Systems Specialist at Tides Canada - “Sales Prospecting in SharePoint 2010 with Business Connectivity Services & External Content Types”

Bringing external data from other business systems into SharePoint is a powerful but often underused feature.  After a brief overview of external data functionality in SharePoint 2010 we will create a working example of a Sales Prospecting solution that allows users to create and mange a prospect list in SharePoint while seamlessly accessing their financial transaction history and other key attributes stored in a separate contact database system.  This is a great way of way leveraging existing functionality on the SharePoint platform that would typically require a developer to merge data from two systems together.

Who is Kyle Mitchell?

Kyle is a Business Systems Analyst with Tides Canada - the largest public foundation focused on the environment and social justice issues in the country. With a degree in Business Administration and Computer Information Systems Kyle has spent the past 5+ years on merging business needs with technology solutions in the public and not-for-profit sectors.  Kyle has experience working as a marketing information analyst at BC Hydro and more recently  managing and administering a highly integrated Microsoft solution involving a Dynamics NAV ERP, Accounting & CRM database, a SharePoint Employee Portal and SQL Server BI & Reporting.  Kyle likes to build codeless solutions by leveraging out-of-the box functionality and improving or re-designing inefficient processes at the process level before bringing in new technology and new systems.

It was my first SharePoint meetup, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am an administrator for my department at UVic, and my role is limited in terms of SharePoint architecture. Therefore, I may not be able to implement some of techniques I learned in the Meetup, but definitely I will discuss those with UVic system when they migrate to 2010 version. I was also truly thrilled with talking with some members there. They are so knowledgeable and gave me hints and solutions for my SharePoint challenges. Thank you for the great opportunity to learn new stuff.
