Vacaville City Council Meeting RE: Chickens- Vacaville Residents only

Hi all, we are forming an action committee to address the recent actions by the City taken against backyard chicken owners in Vacaville. People have had their chickens confiscated and/or had fines levied. We would like to discuss best ways to address this issue in a positive and constructive manner.

Please let us know if you're interested by RSVP'ing Yes to this meetup. We will find a location for this meetup when it generates the support we'll need.

Also, if you would like to sign our Change.org petition, you may find it here: http://www.change.org/petitions/vice-mayor-allow-vacaville-residents-to-raise-chickens-now?utm_campaign=signature_receipt&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petition

Hi Alicia - The meeting was Tuesday night. Sorry you missed it.

I have been asked to reiterate that the City Council will not hear any comments from non-Vacaville residents. If you're a Vacaville resident, please bring your neighbors and other Vacaville residents who would like to show their support for backyard chickens.

The Vacaville City Council voted last night (5-0) to revisit the Chicken banning in the city of Vacaville. We need your support!!! August 26 at 7:00 at the City council building. Be sure to bring all your friends with you.

I called the western feed store in vacaville to ask for support. They said they will pass the information regarding the meeting to their customers.

For those that have just came across this info. Diana, Stephanie & I are working with 2 other ladies in the community on this issue. We have been working on it for over 1 year now & are expecting to have it on August's agenda. We are fairly confident we will prevail. That is all the info I can tell you for now. We will provide an update on the date for the council meeting & hope to have enormous support from the community. It's been a LONG haul, but we are almost there.

Backyard chickens have existed and still do, in abundance, in the Markham/Brown St. areas ~ are their chickens being confiscated?? NO!

      July 3

    • Jennifer

Hi Alba - Yes, the city is aware of that area & there are far more than just chickens out there, it's like a little farming community, but for whatever reason they don't seem to care. I assume it has to do with the neighborhood. Chickens HAVE been confiscated, that started last April/May, right after they changed the "code" that was supposed to make it clear that chickens were outlawed, unfortunately, they did a poor job of "fixing" it & made it even cloudier. Even beyond that, if you really read the code, the way it is written & has been written for quite some time, no one in the city of Vacaville can own any sort of small animal unless they are involved in 4-H or some program of that type. That means even cats, dogs, hamster, fish, etc. Regardless of what is happening in any one neighborhood, we must rally together & get this thing settled once & for all.

I see that Hardy is not running for re-election and that Hunt and Mashburn's terms are up this year. Rowlett and Harris's terms are up in 2016. I want to make sure that chicken friendly people get our support. Who on the council are our friends, and who needs to be replaced?

    • Diana F.

Hi Earl, it seems like Harris, Mashburn and Rowlett are in our corner. Any idea who is running to fill the vacant seats so we can vet them too.

Hello, what is the status of this issue? Found this meetup posting by looking for "municipal code vacaville chickens". Noticed in The Reporter that Animal Place is having a chicken adoption soon. We've considered having chickens, but are unsure whether the issue of backyard chickens was ever resolved. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • Jennifer

No the issue hasn't been resolved yet. We are still working on it. We are almost getting to the point to get it on the Agenda again at City Council.

Wow, you, can't make paragraphs on here - anyway, there are lots of people that have chickens in the city, but it's your call if you want to go ahead & do it anyway. We are hopeful that we will get it through, it may not be everything we are asking for, but we strongly feel that it will be something. We will keep everyone updated as things progress. We have taken our time to make sure we are doing our very best to have the best possible outcome.

Depending on the number of people for the initial meeting, we could probably do this in my home. I just need about a week notice.

    Let me know.

Though we live in the unincorporated area of Solano County
and can raise chickens, I would be happy to meet with you and join you plight for the love of chickens:) Gabrielle I applaud you for taking it to city hall.
If allowing taxpayers a couple chickens in the city limits is too much for the Mayor and city council to figure out,,, then Vote the chicken haters out.
The only council member worth keeping is Mr. Hunt.
    Off my box now :)

      Hi there -

      May 22, 2013

    • Jennifer

OOPS!!! - Sorry - I have been to 2 council meetings that pertained to chickens. Hunt IS NOT for chickens, he has made some rude comments, has repeatedly said chickens aren't something we want in Vacaville, commented on the original presentation of the petition, indicating that the majority of those that signed aren't even Vacaville residents. He is NOT worth keeping. The only 2 that I have noticed that may be swayed is Mitch & Ron, other than that, it looks like we've got alot of work to do to get the others to hear us.

All, once we have the meeting location, we will email you the address. Thanks for your involvement!

    May 22, 2013

    • Stacy
