Re: [bookclub-1222] The Ghost in the Universe

I am in the process of reading Edis's book for another book club.  It demonstrates a much greater understanding of the debate between atheism and theism than is apparent in the neo-atheists.  It is a greater challenge to ones thinking than is Dawkins, et al.
Having come from a positive Christian background, I found his analysis of religion much more insightful, and his balanced approach actually more provocative of issues that I had not recognized as significant in this debate.  He is a materialist and atheist, but discusses the place that religion is playing in society and the difficulties that atheism has for replacing religion.
He is forcing me to deal with issues that never came up in my readings of the neo-atheists.  It is not as easy reading as Hitchens, et al, but I would highly recommend it to our group.  It is a book I will be rereading soon
I would especially recommend chapter 4, History and Holy  Writ, and chapter 9, The Knowledge of Good and Evil.
